Back to the Table Scraps for 2025

I'm joining in with Joyful Quilter's fun Table Scraps Challenge again for 2025.  Small projects are my favorite kind and there's always something in the Challenge that gets me thinking!  For January, the challenge was to use pink (the RSC color of the month) and sew something that was inspired by anything cozy or a warm beverage.

So... ever since I sewed the zipper blocks for an RSC project, I have enjoyed following Lynn at Klein Meisje Quilts (who designed the zipper block) because I love her designs.  In December I discovered her teacup blocks, and wanted to make some.  I also had a scrap bundle of fabric that I bought on a trip to Grand Junction, Colorado, to use.

There are some pretty blues, a pink, some turquoise, and a gold in ⬆️ the bundle -
perfect for this project!  I did figure out that these are from the Hampton Court fabric line, by Karen Lewis Textiles for Figo Fabrics.

So, I started making these sweet tea cups!

I ended up making six of them - for a little quilt that measures about 9.5 x 18.5.

More scraps were used on the back and for the binding.

I made it that size so that it would fit in a specific spot - on top of our microwave.  That's where the coffee mugs go when not in use!

Fits perfectly!

And there was a bonus Table Scraps project this month, too - just because.  I quickly finished up the gray crumb heart that I shared in my Thursday post.  It was a poor orphan block that I found when cleaning out a storage drawer.  Now it brings me a smile!

Just sew!

I Like Thursday #422

Why is it when you decide to sort through and organize a storage area, especially one from your sewing room, you get a bigger mess than you started with?  This is a three drawer storage unit that I've had for a long time.  It's one of those places where you stuff something in and close the drawer.  I decided to clean it out.  I got through the first drawer!

There were a bunch of charm squares - from different fabric lines -
some go together and some don't.  What do you do with those?
There were also a bunch of of orphan blocks - the type you make when you're trying something out before making the real thing.
Lots of other junk in there, too - some of it I threw away, some I put back in the drawer.
Clearly, I didn't get very far!

Here's one of the orphan blocks.  No it's not a black and white picture!  I made this gray heart when I was working on the crumb hearts quilt.  At first I thought it was going to be the final heart for the quilt, but I didn't end up liking it.  So it went in the drawer.

Now I'm going to make it into a little something - and a pink border will dress it up and make it a lot cuter.

Sewing those borders on was way more fun than cleaning out a drawer!  (wink!)

I have a new favorite tea - Country Peach Passion from Celestial Seasonings.  It smells so good, and tastes yummy, too.  Very good with muffins fresh out of the oven on a cold and snowy day!

And a good book to share this week, too - Louise Penny's most recent in the Inspector Gamache series.  It's a page turner!

More about it on Goodreads here.

Hope you're having a great week!  Joining in with Not Afraid of Color for I Like Thursday.

Midweek Update

Bunny in the snow -

I prefer my bunny in the garden!

For round 2 of the Stay at Home Round Robin, Anja of Anja Quilts called for half square triangles to be our next step, so I made a few!

Last week I sewed everything I made to the center block, but this week I'm holding off on that.  Maybe a future border prompt will fit in with this one and they'll be sewn together.  For now I'm just playing with the possibilities!  The blue is a fat quarter I'm auditioning for possible fill in strips when needed.

Here's one idea:

Bunny ears!

Or maybe this?

It's fun to explore the possibilities!

More winter stitching...

We seem to be in a weather pattern of storms rolling in for the weekend - at least that's been the case for the last two Saturdays.  It snowed all day yesterday here!  I'm not sure what the final amount of snow was, but here's how we keep track of the snow total visually!

I took this picture yesterday morning, when we thought the snow was about finished.
I think the snow on the picnic table was about double that by the end of the day!

So more wintry weather means more Winter stitching.  I finished up the header and the first stamp in the last few days.  My Aida cloth is a light blue, but it's still hard to see the contrast when using white for the snowman and snowflakes, so I'm using some light blue here and there.  A single strand of light blue outlining Mr. Snow seems to bring him out a little bit.

I still have the last row of borders to stitch, too.
I've been alternating that with the fun stuff!

Wishing you a warm and cozy Sunday with your slow stitching!

Working on a finish...

I have been determined not to let January go by without pulling an older UFO out of the to-be-quilted closet and moving it forward.  This is Masala Box, a design by Sew Preeti Quilts, on my design wall in November of 2022.  I purchased Preeti's pattern in January of 2022 and made two blocks every month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

I love this design and was happy with the look of it as a rainbow quilt, so can not tell you why I've let it sit unfinished for so long.   But not anymore!  I have stocked up on batting and backing yardage, and last Sunday I got it layered, spray basted, and ready to quilt!

Stitching along, horizontal lines first.

It's fun to look at the scrap pieces as they move on by.  There are lots of penguins in this quilt!

And because January is the month of pink for the RSC - here's a favorite block.

Penguins on pink!

I Like Thursday #421

Good morning, friends!  Isn't this little guy cute?!  He is up on the wall at my mom's place.  They do a great job decorating for seasons and holidays there.  I read recently that it's an important thing to do to help elderly people, especially those with dementia and memory issues (in which category my mom definitely is) pay attention to time and place.  I appreciate it, too, because the decorations make it very pleasant to visit!

We watched a really good movie the other night - "Harriet," about Harriet Tubman.  The main character is played by Cynthia Erivo, who plays the wicked witch in "Wicked."  She's very good!  This was available to us on Hulu, but could be available on other streaming platforms, too.  It came out in 2019 originally.

Carole at From My Carolina Home shared a recipe for Stuffed Peppers in a recent post, and it looked good, so I decided to try it.  Turns out it was yummy!  Carole's recipe says "Stuffed Pepers for Two," but it actually made enough for the three of us and one half of a pepper leftover.

This week I've worked on my Stay at Home Round Robin (see yesterday's post) and also my January table scraps project.  I don't usually share that project until the end of the month, but this is too cute not to share!  The tea cup pattern is from Klein Meisje Quilts.

A little more work to do - I'll share the finish next week.

Midweek Update

Stay at Home Round Robin - Round 1

Kathleen of Kathleen McMusing is the host for this first round, and she chose to make a border that starts with her first initial, K, and that turned out to be a block called King's Crossing.  So... my first initial is D - what quilt design starts with D?

After hunting around online for a bit for ideas, I thought I had it.  On Quilter's Cache I found a paper-pieced block called Diamond Chain that I was going to go with, only to realize that the scale was off for the size of my center block.  I might use this one later on, so keeping it on the backburner.

Then it came to me - Dresden Plates start with D!  That sounded doable, and I have a tiny two inch Dresden wedge ruler to use for them, too.

But before making the Dresdens, I added two plain borders to my center block - a 1 inch floral and a 1.5 inch (finished) Grunge cream border.

Right now this measures 12.5 x 13 - just a bit taller than it is wide.

I decided to make two quarter Dresdens and place them in opposite corners of my piece - like this:

And here's how the whole thing looks now:

Slow Sunday Stitching

Here's our view outside on Saturday morning - cold and snowy!

And here's the view inside - appropriate, right?!  This is Melisa at PinkernPunkin's Winter SAL.  I thought it would be fun to work on right now.  Turns out it may take me until next winter to finish this one!

I still have more of the individual borders to do,
but wanted to work on the header a little, too.

Melisa has released five of the little stamps, and they are so cute!  I can't wait to stitch them.  Check out her latest post about the project here.

On Thursday I spent some time at a friend's house where we had some crochet lessons from another friend who is quite accomplished at it.  We've done this before, a couple years ago, but neither of us could remember what to do and lost any skills we might have had!   This time around I'm going to keep practicing!

So I've got plenty to do for some slow Sunday stitching, and
I'll be linking up at Kathy's Quilts.

Playing with pink...

After finishing my Pathways quilt earlier in the week (see this post),  I had some time to just play in the sewing room, and that is what I did!

First I decided to do a little sorting and reorganizing.  Since moving my sewing up to a corner of our master bedroom a year ago or so, I've been using these plastic baskets from Dollar Tree to hold what I am currently working on right now.   Right now it is the supplies for the Stay at Home Round Robin, which has just started.  And my pink scraps and blocks for January's Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks are in the other basket.

Of course, doing that sort of thing gets you thinking about cutting and sewing, so I had to make a few pink blocks!

If I could get two inch squares, I made some four patches.  These are 3.5 inches.

Or maybe they will turn into 16 patches???

2.5 and 3.5 inch squares can make more quarter square blocks.  These blocks are 4.5 inches.

And 3.5 inch squares turned into a sixteen patch star block.  I've been wanting to make this block for awhile, and I like how it turned out!  These finish at 12 inches.

It's a Finish!

Pathways of My Life (a design from Melva Loves Scraps which she calls Pieces of My Life) is finished!  I put the last hand stitches in the binding on Tuesday evening, and then hung it up for some beauty shots.  I really wanted to take it outside for photos, but the light was never quite right - I think it's the time of year.

This quilt journey began in March of 2024 when Melva introduced the idea of making a quilt to tell the story of your life.  Since I was going to be celebrating my 70th birthday in September of 2024, this seemed like the perfect project for the year.  And I enjoyed it immensely!

57.5 x 61.5
I loved making each and every block in this quilt -
not a one of then gave me any trouble.
Thank you, Melva, for great instructions for each block and section, plus
the how-to for finishing this in Quilt As You Go style!
It all worked out well!

I've been trying to decide if I have a favorite block - and it could be this one, the large spool block.  It represents my wedding dress - read more about it here.

In particular, this one is special to me because my mom made my dress and I included this photo in the post.  A memory of happy times!  What girl wouldn't remember her wedding dress as her favorite dress ever?!

The backing for Pathways of My Life is this pretty yellow with floral wreaths on it.

I quilted each block a little differently - some stitch-in-the-ditch, some topstitching, some grids, some gentle curves.  It was fun looking at the blocks and figuring out what might work in each one.

To bind it, I used the same blue Grunge, called "Sea," that I used for the sashing throughout the quilt.  As I put the quilt together, I had an up and down relationship with that sashing color - questioning my decision-making in choosing it, since it's pretty dark.  But it came to symbolize the pathways that life takes you on - meandering all around the quilt - just as through life - and I grew to like it.

A lot of you have followed along all the way through this project, and I thank you so much for that!  As much for myself as for any other reason, I'm going to list all the previous posts about making this quilt in this post, but if you're curious about any of them, you can click on the links below.

I Like Thursday #420

Happy Thursday!

I saw this online somewhere the other day, and liked it.
I'm thankful for soft quilts, warm mugs, and kind friends!

When it snows here, the juncos show up, and we enjoy seeing them.  They are such pretty birds - but very active, so hard to get many photos of them.

After looking through my stash for coordinating fabrics for this year's Stay At Home Round Robin project, I decided to go shopping at my LQS.  This is what I brought home -

Definitely a feeling of Spring here!

Younger son decided to bake bread the other day.  He used a yeast bread recipe from my old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook for "Cheese Bread" and it turned out to be really good!  We decided to do smaller loaves just to make sure they baked all the way through.  I don't always trust my oven temperature - does anyone else have trouble with that?  Some things bake just fine - other things can be way off and under done.

One of our favorite PBS shows came back for a new season this past Sunday, "All Creatures Great and Small."  We enjoyed the first episode!

Hope you're having a great week!  I finished the Pieces of My Life quilt - that's a big celebration - I'm working on a finished post for tomorrow.

Midweek Update

I'm joining in again with the 2025 Stay At Home Round Robin!  This will be the fifth year that I've participated and it's always fun.  This year's center block and plan for the project is following along with what I did the last two years - I am using a finished embroidery piece in a seasonal wall-hanging.  In 2023 I made a winter wall-hanging; summer followed in 2024.

For 2025, the theme will be Spring!  This is a Kathy Schmitz design that I stitched a couple years ago and haven't done anything with.

Spring colors will make the pieced blocks around it - pinks, blues, and greens.  Plus there is quite a bit of the floral left that I used in Pieces of My Life to add in, too.

Looking forward to getting started with the first round next Monday!
