I'm so excited to be joining in this year! If this is your first visit to Little Penguin Quilts, thanks for stopping by! I love to make scrappy quilts of all sizes, and Christmas projects are some of my favorites. I also love being part of the quilt blogging community, and get lots of inspiration for my own projects from the bloggers I follow.
When it comes to holiday decorations, Christmas trees are at the top of my list! I love them inside -
I love them outside -
And I especially love quilted Christmas trees! Almost every year, I make a new tree project.
The adorable mug rugs in the lower right picture of the collage are from a tutorial by my friend, Sandra, of mmmquilts, and with her permission, I am sharing them with you today. Sandra calls them Leaning Tree Mug Rugs, and they are so fun to make! Back when I made these the first time, I gave them all away, so this year I decided to make some more!
Using four fat quarters of Holiday Lodge by Deb Strain for Moda,
I cut out enough pieces to make two large trees and four small ones.
They combine to make two mug rugs that measure 9.5 x 6.5.
Christmas trees even make it into my holiday baking! There are just two of us at our house these days, and we don't eat a lot of sweets, so this recipe from Carole at From My Carolina Home is my go-to for Just a Dozen Sugar Cookies.
Yum! If we were meeting at a neighborhood cookie exchange,
I would be sharing these with you!
Thanks, again, for visiting today, and don't forget to check out all the other blog hop participants!
thank you for sharing your Christmas thing and the tutorial for the mug rugs
I like Sandra's mug rugs, thanks for sharing.
love the mug rug. I try to not make a lot of cookies at this time of year but I find it next to impossible - we like so many different kinds and even though I give some away there is still too many around. I cut recipes in half at least.
I love Christmas trees too :) Your sugar cookies look good and I like all your tree deco's. Thanks for sharing and have a Merry Christmas!
Thank you for sharing my recipe for a small batch of sugar cookies. I'm making some this week!
Thanks for sharing the mug rug tute. I needed an idea for a quick project.
Your tree mug rugs are just the cutest things! And I'm carefully NOT clicking through to the recipe for just a few cookies. At our house, we can only keep on hand ZERO cookies. Because no matter how many we start with, after about 10 minutes there are only ZERO again :)
Great cookie recipe! That Carole's a genius :-) and so are you in following her recipe! Thanks for sharing it. I probably wasn't familiar with her blog yet when she posted. Your tree mug rugs are perfect for the season! Happy December!
I have a Christmas Tree cookie cutter too... trees are a must for Christmas cookies! Lovely mug rugs, thanks for sharing.
I love all your trees! Thanks for sharing all the links - I've got a few trees in my future now, too!
You sure know how to do up the holidays in style. What fun projects and yummy looking cookies!
I love the tree in the middle right of the collage. I may have whip some up! Thanks for the inspiration!
Awwww, your little tree mug rugs are so cute! I want one for me! Love to decorate sugar cookies!! :)
Christmas trees, mug rugs and sugar cookies...a perfect Christmas combination! I love how cute those mug rugs are with not just one tree, but three. Thanks for the link to the sugar cookie recipe. A dozen is just right for my hubby and me. I'm so glad you joined in the hop and shared your Christmas joy...thank you!
Super cute mug rugs, Diann!! Thanks for the link to the color recipe. A dozen colors is PLENTY for us!
Oh, those cookies look tasty, and small batch is great too! Cute mug rugs, Diann! I'm with you - I love to look at Christmas trees, especially with lights. One tradition we had when the kids were younger was that they got to "sleep under the tree" one night. It was a favorite event. Our tree has gotten smaller, and our kids, bigger. Sleeping under the tree is but a memory now, but still a favorite.
Cute mug rugs, and those cookies look delicious!
Hi Diann! Those tree mug rugs are so darn cute. Thanks for sharing Sandra's tutorial - I think I may need to make a couple. My favorite part of the holiday season are the decorated trees. I love to turn mine on in the very early morning with the village lights and just enjoy the peace and quiet. Thanks for sharing all the goodies, especially a nice small recipe for just a dozen cookies! ~smile~ Roseanne
Those are very nice mug rugs. I could see making these myself and just 12 sugar cookies sounds like a good amount of cookies for me as well.
I love Christmas trees too. We don't put up a big tree any more, but I have several table top trees, several wall hangings with trees, 2 ceramic trees, a bunch of trees made with miscellaneous materials) wood, feathers, polymer clay). I only make 2 kinds of cookies, the peanut butter ones with Hersey kisses and Russian tea cake and I don't make them until Christmas Eve or the day before because my husband eats too many.
Love all your trees!!! What fun they are...now I need to make some!! Sugar cookies are my favorite at any time and now, thanks to you, I have a recipe for 12 at a time!! Thank you from another retired teacher who loves making quilts!!
Decorated sugar cookies are a must at Christmas time. Have you ever used egg yolk paint? The yolk has coloring added to it and you paint the cookies before they are baked. I do love Christmas trees and your mug rug are perfect.
I am a mug rug junkie and I rate your's a 10. Love each of your other quilted pieces also. Who could ask for more, a nice cuppa, a sugar cookie all nice and cheery on a holiday inspired mug rug.
All the tiny trees are awesome! The cookies look great too.
I love cut out cookies too!
Those cookies look yummy. My mouth is watering. I could use one with a cup of tea sitting on one of those pretty mug rugs. I like trees too, but I am partial to nutcrackers and Santas.
Carole's sugar cookie recipe is great. Cut outs are fun to do with little ones as well. Cute idea with the mug rugs.
What a nice collections of all sorts of trees you have! I love the mug rugs, and I'm also loving that little mini in the middle right of your collage. Did you use a pattern for that? The sugar cookies look yummy. :)
Love, love, love those mug rugs. What fantastic gifts to make.
I don't eat a lot of sweets, so 12 cookies sounds just right!! Of course. my hubby will gladly eat what I don't which would probably be 10 of them! LOL Thanks for sharing them and your mug rugs. Mug rugs are such fun to make!
I love those various Christmas trees. Too cute!
Pretty mug rugs, and delicious looking sugar cookies.
Such cute tree projects! Thank you for the tutorial for the mug rug. This would make a great gift! Cookies look yummy!
Your tree projects are lovely and so is your Christmas tree. I love Christmas trees too.
Love your tree projects! It gives me good ideas to do something with these blocks I found! Roasted carrots sound delish to me! I want to go to see the Mr. Rogers movie soon; it looks fantastic! Thanks for the heads up about the blog! I appreciate it! Have a wonderful day Diann!
Gosh, I nearly missed this post!
I love all your trees but especially your newest mug rugs.
Thanks for the reminder fo Sandra’s Tutorial, I’d forgotten that one, I’ll have to see if I can manage to make some!
