We took a walk in the woods the other day. It's finally greening up around here! This trail followed the Big Thompson River.
We heard lots of birds and saw some baby squirrels running around. They were tiny! And curious about us, too. Their mama was making a bunch of noise from another direction, trying to warn them about us, but we told her we weren't going to bother her babies.
What we were actually looking for was a big cottonwood tree that we had read about in the newspaper a few days earlier. It contains a heron rookery - where many Great Blue Herons are nesting right now. Unfortunately it was a ways off the trail, and on private property, so we couldn't get very close to it. Mike got this photo with his big lens.
Back at home, younger son made Madeleines, and they were yummy! We found the silicone baking trays on Amazon, and they worked great - no sticking! He also made a chocolate version on another day, and I really liked those! 😊
Speaking of cooking, LeeAnna's question of the week is about salads. Do we like them? Do we eat them? Apparently May is National Salad Month. I didn't know that, but I'm happy to celebrate it because I do like salads - all different kinds. Being a lazy cook, a salad for dinner is pretty easy. Just add some protein to all your veggies and you're good to go! Last night we had taco salad - a favorite at our house. But, my true favorite salad is a fruit salad! This is not my photo, but doesn't it look yummy? You can find the recipe for Rainbow Fruit Salad by clicking the link.

What a pretty place to walk! I've never had a madeleine - those look delicious. Does your son watch the baking shows on Food Network or any of the Gordon Ramsay cooking shows? We currently like Spring Baking Championship and Great British Baking Show as well as Next Level Chef. But we get hungry watching them!
I'm so glad you went in search of that Great Blue Heron nursery! Lol! My Dad would've done the same and I certainly would've joined him. We had lots of fun strolls in search of whatever. The baby squirrels are so cute and they listen to their parents just as much as human babies do! Lol! Have a good day.
Looks like a very nice walk. My Guy has the same problem with eagle nests, some of the ones he checks are on private property. Some he's been granted access since he's working with a research group, but others he can only "see" with his long lens. Nice photo of the rookery. I like green salads, I've not been too fond of fruit salad, well unless it's my sister's frozen fruit salad. Have a great weekend.
That a gorgeous fruit salad! Makes me want to make an extra trip to the grocery store. Grapes, strawberries, blueberries and little cutie oranges are available now. All imported, not too expensive yet! A nice walk, and a pretty good photo of the blue heron’s rookery. Madeleines looks yummy. I don’t believe I’ve ever tasted one. 🤔
What a great walk! Mike captured a great photo. I too like salads. . .all kinds. . .the fruit salad looks delicious.
that is a lot of herons in the tree - we have some along a river here and the birds are in them all the time. Lovely looking salad for sure
Oh I would sure have liked getting closer to that rookery! Thank Mike for getting that interesting photo. I too love all the salads especially ones with a little crunch.
How fun to see a heron rookery! Mike got a great shot with his long lens. Baby squirrels are so cute, but I'm sure mama was none too pleased with her kiddos checking you out. I've never tasted Madeleines, but they sure look good, and so does that salad!
That looks like a pretty trail. I wish I made fruit salads like that! That's a lot of chopping (or maybe really good AI).
Wow! How cool to see the heron rookery! I am so glad that Mike thought to bring his long lense to photograph it! I don't know a thing about Madeleines...guess I need to look them up. Salads? Oh yes...all kinds! :)
That's so neat that you can see the heron rookery! That whole area looks like a great place to walk. I love Madeleines! I forgot all about the salad question. That fruit salad looks delicious!!
We have a lot of blue herons in our area, but I have never seen them nesting. What a treat to see and photograph, Diann. How interesting. Oh my that baby squirrel is the cutest! Thank you for the link to the fruit salad. I just need to purchase the kiwi and then I am all set. Yum on the taco salad; it is one of my favorites. Hugs.
You have a lovely place to walk and enjoy nature. Mike did a great job getting the photo of the herons. There is a place in Old Town Alexandria, VA that I visit when I go there called La Madeleine. They have delicious madeleines. I've never considered making them myself. My favorite summer salad in a quinoa salad. We often have it with fish or chicken.
I love your nature photos! So beautiful. The Madeleines do indeed look delicious as does the fruit salad!
