I Like Thursday #86 - A New Experience

Way back in November, our youngest son told us he would really like to go to an Indycar race, and he thought the easiest one to get to would be one that takes place in June in Fort Worth, Texas.  We asked what he would think about us tagging along, and he was all for it.

So, plans made and logistics figured out, last week we flew with him to Love Field in Dallas, Texas, to go to Texas Motor Speedway and see the DXC Technology 600 race!

Despite the OMG (!) heat and humidity there, we had a great time!  Everything was new to us, so it was all interesting and a fun experience.

First view of the Speedway - they call it "No Limits, Texas!"

So much color and sound!  (We used ear protection although many people around us didn't.)

I love how the outfits that the pit crews wear match their driver's car.

This was my husband's favorite car - orange and blue - Denver Broncos colors!  This driver won the race.

I liked this one the best -

It was so fascinating to watch the pit crews do their job - completely choreographed so that the whole stop takes maybe 8 seconds!

We did manage a few moments of quiet and relaxation.

A wander through some Texas woods - Clear Creek Natural Area - part of the city of Denton, Texas, near where our hotel was.  Lots of birds and butterflies in there, but hard to photograph!

And a visit to Grapevine, Texas, with a little wine tasting included.

I didn't know that the Texas climate would support grape growing, but evidently it does!  And they make tasty wines, too!

All in all, a fun trip, and wonderful to spend this time with our son who is a huge racing fan, and very knowledgeable about it.  I learned a lot!

Thanks for visiting today for "I Like Thursday!"  Hope you're having a great week!  Be sure to check out the other Thursday posts at Not Afraid of Color.

What a fun trip. I know that some Indy races are like road races with turns in both directions; was this one? I can't get into NASCAR with their boring oval tracks (and their mean behavior to each other).

What a cool way to spend time with your son! I never knew humidity till I lived in Houston through a summer. Glad you were able to experience different activities there. Nice trip.

Hi Diann,
WOW - my niece and her husband lived in Grapevine for years. I have spent a lot of time there, even to that winery. And IndyCar Racing - love, love, LOVE it. Isn't it just thrilling when they wave the green flag and they all start racing?! Gives me the chills just typing it. And ear protection is a good thing - it is SO loud. I'm so glad y'all had fun! Happy Thursday! ~smile~ Roseanne

I'm glad you had fun on your trip! My sister lives on the northern side of the DFW metro, so I head down there to visit her pretty often and it really is dreadfully hot and humid. We were down over Memorial day and basically spent all outside time in some form of water (backyard pool/springkler/public pool/water park).

Glad you had a great family time-even in the hot humidity!!
I did watch the Indy race in May--it was Danica's last race--thought those cars scare me--I am more a Nascar fan--what can I say--yep--70 year old female loves racing!! and I listen to it to know the drivers and their teams and all their charities (most of the drivers have their own charity foundations and they are neat to learn about)
you don't see that or their families in other sports--so racing is good!!!
Does your son like to drive fast cars--or do any kind of racing??
enjoy, di

What fun! Nice that your son was all for you going with him. :) You were in our favorite Texas stomping grounds. We lived near Dallas for 7 wonderful years, and my late brother and his wife lived in Denton. We would move back to that area in a heartbeat. Yes the heat and humidity are not what you are used to! Like you I was surprised when wineries started popping up all over Texas. Apparently certain grapes thrive here!

What a fun trip! We've driven by the speedway in Fort Worth, but I've never been to a race there.

Good for you - trying something new! And it looks like it was a good experience - how bad can it be with a winery thrown in the mix? Enjoy your upcoming week!
