To make this month's Table Scraps placemat, I started with a piece I had made at least a year ago from a tutorial on Joyful Quilter's blog. I shared this photo on my To-Do Tuesday post.
Unfortunately, Joy says the tutorial is no longer available.
But I did enjoy playing with some charm squares to
create this design in the first place!
It wasn't quite the right size to begin with, so I added 1.5 inch strips of an orange solid to bring the placemat to 12.5 x 16.5 inches. Add some simple quilting and a mellow blue binding, and the placemat was done quickly!
So now there are nine!
The orange looks really florescent - I promise it isn't!
But wait, there's more!
Originally I made two of these pieced sections. What should I do with the other one?
I was thinking maybe a quick zipper pouch, and I remembered this tutorial from Sew Preeti Quilts. I made one of these before, when I first started reading Preeti's blog. Simplest Zippered Pouch. It really is simple! I layered the top piece with some batting and backing, quilted the layers, and found an orange zipper.
Following the steps of the tutorial gave me a finished zipper pouch in about an hour. I think this one will be handy for using somewhere that a flat pouch would be useful, like in a suitcase?!
9.5 x 7
The backing/lining piece I used is one of those big print fabrics that I could never figure out another use for! It was perfect for this pouch.
***Sharing my pouch at mmmquilts for the September DrEAMi link-up since this was a true "drop everything and make it " project. Plus it turned out to be the perfect size and shape to carry masks, hand sanitizer, and packets of bleach wipes on our recent trip! I didn't even plan it that way.***
So there's my week in an orange nutshell!

What a pit that the free pattern is no more available. Your placemat of the month is very cool, and I love to see all the beautiful placemats you made this year so far.
They look so happy together. Great job, Diann.
Great collection of placemats. Every time I see yours I say "I'm going to make some." Some day ...
Looks like that extra block was definitely meant to be a little bag, just perfect for it. I never did get around to making that block(along with many others!).
Excellent use of those Mini Magic Stars, Diann!! Your placemat will be a lovely addition to the September 2021 TABLE SCRAPS Challenge Link Party coming up on the weekend of Sept. 24th.
Love your placemat and I'm sad that the link is no longer available at Joyful's blog. Cute little purse too! Glad you had time this week to play with orange.
Lovely placemat, Diann, and clever you making a pouch from the extra piece! It's a shame Joy has taken the pattern down; do you think we could persuade her to put it back?
It IS ADORABLE!!!
Great pouch, and a great use of the leftovers. I keep stamps and address labels in one like that. And the orange isn't fluorescent, it's cheerful!
I am late getting blogs read today - love those little half square triangles in this!
Didn't you do well two projects done and dusted!
your projects are looking good!
oh no I didn't write the instructions for that. I like your placemats and the bag is always a good idea
Great use of the Magic Stars ! I love the bright, happy, cheerful orange! And a girl can’t have too many pouches! You just can’t!
Love the orange scraps placemat. Those little triangles add so much interest.
Beautuful placemats. Love them
It's so eye pleasing to see all the placemats together! Taking orphan blocks and using them as you have done is such a great idea! They are so fun and gorgeous!
I love both projects! You had a very productive week.
Beautiful orange placemat and zipper pouch, and using up a UFO! Cute and clever.
Aren't you the clever one! Loved the placemat. . .those triangles make the block so interesting! Cute bag and finishes. . .WONDERFUL!
Great little pouch !
Orange always seems brighter online.
Your placemat looks great. In fact, all of them do! I'm disappointed to hear Joy's tutorial was taken down. I made a block or two myself. So, maybe I have a placemat in the making.
A very colorful and fun collection of placemats. Your new zippered pouch turned out beautifully. You definitely had a very productive weekend.
Well, Diann, thank you for thinking of me :-) I wrote that so long ago...I almost forgot about it.
The orange placement is my absolute favorite. So cheerful!!! Nine placemats already!!! Looks like you are asking for a party and I just invited myself :-D
I am devastated about that pattern :-( I love it and was hoping to make it someday, you know, when I came across the the right fabric bundle and the perfect timing. Ah well.
Love all those colorful placemats and the pouch is beautiful. Nothing like scrappy pouch!
Placemats are all gorgeous, but what a wonderful idea for your leftover one & to think that you are using it for something which has seemingly taken over our lives with what we need to take with us. Well done.
A pair of wonderful orange projects, and wow, that you got to use your pouch right away! I love that block you did, think it's somewhere in a book I have.... Thank you for linking up your squirrel of the month!
So cute, all those colorful placemats, Diann! What happened to Joy's tutorial? Nice to make a quick squirrely pouch out the extra!
