Hope your week is going well!
Thanks for visiting on "I Like Thursday," hosted by
LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color.
I like my geranium which has not really bloomed all summer, but must have decided the end of October needed a little pink in it!
We went for a walk at our local natural area the other day and Mike got this great picture of the cattails at the edge of the pond.
The largest fire in Colorado history is burning just a few miles from here and you can see it from town! That's not a like, but certainly something that has shaped my week.
I'm sure the foothill and mountain wildlife is being displaced by the fire, and we happened to see several beautiful Steller's Jays in our yard the other day. Normally they are not backyard birds at all, but stay in the mountains.
I think this is a good example of ugly gardening, that our friend, Jocelyn at Canadian Needle Nana, has posted about. We've been working on leaf pick-up the last couple weeks, but it is really fun to see the birds and squirrels hunting around under the leaves that remain, looking for tasty morsels!
I have loved this book this week, and really recommend it! (And not just because there are penguins in it, lol!)
And just to have something quilting-related to share - in my Tuesday post I showed the yellow HSTs that were ready to be sewn into the zigzag row - and here they are with all their colorful buddies!
Rows are ready to be sewn together now!
That's it from here for this week! Don't forget to visit the other I Like Thursday bloggers over at Not Afraid of Color!
I was wondering how close the fire was to you. Stay safe. Love the tiny pink geranium. We have had a lot of leaves hit the ground too. But with the pouring rain there they will stay for now. Awesome quilt.
I wondered about that fire! I feel so sorry for the wildlife. :(
The zig-zags look great!
I hope the fire will go out soon - nice to have new birds flying in for you to see but not if it is because they are flying away from the fire.
these fires... I hope your home isn't in danger. The cattail pic is so good, and the jay pic is too. Aren't they sharp and pretty? Thank you Diann for showing us beauty today
Love your rainbow zigzags! Thanks for the book recommendation; I've added it to my list.
Beautiful capture of the cattails...so pretty...your Geranium looks good...hope the cold doesn't get to it. The Birds and Squirrel look totally happy foraging in the leaves. Love the Zig Zag quilt...so pretty..have a great day!
Saw this morning that there were evacuations in CO and immediately thought of you. Glad you're still home enjoying the bonus wildlife and hope the fires get under control SOON! I have problems with geraniums too. I think it's too hot here for them to bloom a lot because mine always look good early in the spring and then later in the fall. Have a great Thursday!
I love the play of color in your zigzag quilt. I would not like seeing that fire so close. We are having small fires a few miles from Phoenix all of a sudden but I see rain and snow for you and I by Monday. I sure hope that helps. I haven’t seen cattails in like forever. So pretty.thanks for sharing such pretty things. Happy Thursday!
I think of you every night as we watch Denver news! The fires are just terrifying! I’m praying for cooler weather, less wind and some “wet stuff”. When DH was a volunteer fireman, that was a thing they said. “Put the wet stuff on the red stuff”
I’m so excited to see your zig zag rows go together! I ❤️ them! And I will look for How the Penguins Saved Veronica“. Thanks for the recommendation.
Had to come looking for your post today because the email I usually get at mid-day hasn't arrived (neither has Leanna's). That's scary that the fire is close enough for you to see in the night sky. We've had rain all week, over 2 ". I've never seen a stellar jay. I really like the zigzag quilt and can't wait to see it finished.
Hi Diann! Oh, your zig zags look so nice all laid out and ready to be sewn together. That is one big fire. I'm sorry it is still burning. I had hoped the weather would aid in putting it out. What a pretty pink geranium! I hope you bring it inside and try to winter it. I've had fairly good luck with that, and most interesting is that the flower color changes (or did in my case). ~smile~ Roseanne
The cattails are beautiful. The Steller's Jay is cool! Those zig-zag rows look awesome!
I really like that you are ready to sew your Zig Zag Rows quilt together, Diann!!!
I was so worried about you and that fire! I hope it stays far from you! Love the pretty photographs, we all seem to have adopted Jocelyn's "ugly garden" phrase! LOL! I adore cattails by the way! So cool! Have a good and safe week!
The zig zags are looking great! Some of the property we owned (when I was growing up) has a small lake and lots of cattails and we would pick them for enjoying in the house. That area has been built up and now has a nice restaurant that my hubs and I love to go to for breakfast on Sundays. If it's nice out, we sit out on the patio that overlooks that lake where I used to ice skate and pick those cattails. I always want to go pick some--just once more--but figure I prob shouldn't! Maybe someday...when no one is looking...
I've been thinking about you this week with the blow up of those fires. Glad to see you're still safe, and pray it stays that way. Come on snow!
Your zigzag quilt is awesome!
Oh, I need to check out that book (it makes me think of Mr. Popper's Penguins, but I'm sure it's a completely different story - ha!). Stellar's Jays are such beautiful birds; glad you are getting to see them in your backyard, in spite of the reason why they are showing up.
