When Lori of Humble Quilts introduced this year's Fall QAL, she shared pictures of the landscape that inspired her, so I thought I'd share a view I had earlier this week when my husband and I went hiking up in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Dark browns, dark greens, and golden grasses in the middle.
Clue #2 in the QAL for this week was to find 2.5 inch squares in our brown scraps and sew them to the 4 patches made last week, alternating every other one. Here was my plan:
I've spent some time every evening this week hand - piecing these blocks and rows together. Just one row left to add on. Of course, even though I kept referring to my photo of the plan, I flipped a few blocks the wrong way! But mostly I just left them because they're all scrappy browns, so they all fit.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the next step is!

Looks Great!!! Do you think that scenery at the time you make a quilt inspires your color choices? Have a great day Diann!
America has beautiful national parks. Rocky Mountain National Park is no exception; such a glorious place in which to hike. I agree, I don't think you would notice if you made a mistake with this quilt as each and every square looks fabulous together, no matter which way put them together. Enjoy your Sunday stitching.
that looks like a fall quilt coming along in those colors for sure - love Rocky Mt National Park
Glad I am not the only one who manages to swap the layout of blocks when sewing them together. Looks like a very picturesque hike!
I visited the park in 1994; I'd love to go back! Your browns are just delicious!! I do the photo thing, too, to help me keep track. I also do the inadvertent swap thing. ;)
Wonderful progress on your hand piecing!
That is a perfect fall project. Those colors are spot on!
Gorgeous and for some reason the colors remind me a Kimt painting.
Beautiful colors in your fall project. I still plan to do that one sometime. I am saving the clues.
well done Diann, sure the picture is inspiring and your blocks are perfec
I've never tried hand piecing, are you enjoying it?
What a great view to have while you walk. Your scrappy blocks are looking pretty.
I'm loving the Autumn vibe of your version of 50 Shades of Brown, Diann! I looked at my scrap stash, but didn't get any further than that. Maybe this week...
If I used a photo from the recent Colorado trip I would have to find brilliant yellows to represent the Aspens we saw. Just gorgeous.
What a great fall project....perfect fall colors in your quilt.
You picked some great browns, the project has a nice glow, like the late afternoon sun hitting some autumn leaves.
