Dueling Squirrels

Just like those squirrels, I've been going multiple directions in my sewing room the last couple weeks.  It's been a case of one thing leading to another, following inspiration from multiple sources!

After seeing Mari's Modern Blocks, I had to try some, too.  I chose a small piece of Kona Butter, and scraps in a dark pink/magenta, some bright yellow Grunge, a couple different dark turquoises, and purple to make 20 of these 5 inch blocks.

I think you can also call this a Hatchet block.

After settling on a layout and sewing the blocks together, this week I finished up the tablerunner I made from these blocks.

This one measures about 18 x 23

It looks good hanging like this, too!

I quilted it in a diamond spiral following the shapes created by the blocks.  Binding is the same dark purple as in the block corners.  I had a lot of the purple left from my Beothuk Star quilt, finished up last year.

Here's the backing - just something I happened to have enough of - but it is bright and sunny!

I thought it would be fun to use this tablerunner on the table out on our back porch!

Meanwhile, along the way, I got sidetracked by the bonus triangles left from those stitch and flip corners in the above project.  I almost never save those, but this time I did!  What could I do with them?

Enter the next inspiration, from The Joyful Quilter's Monday Mini post of a couple weeks ago.  She made an adorable mini quilt for her kitchen that involved a pink fairy!

I have a whole panel full of forest fairies that I won in a giveaway when I first started blogging (in 2013!) that  I've never been inspired to use for anything.

Why not play with one of these?

So I did!

The HSTs made kind of an off-center outer border for the fairy I chose,
and again, the purple for binding.  This mini ended up measuring about 10 x 12.

The Blackberry Fairy is now hanging with the International Sisters,  watching over my sewing room.

So, dueling squirrels?  Or maybe they're BFFs!

Whatever you want to call them, they were fun to play with!

Who can resist squirrels when they turn out so darn cute? The spiral quilting is just perfect. Love the purple binding too.

I love the layout of your little quilt, at a glance one would not know that it is comprised of the hatchet block. You had fun squirrels in your sewing room;)

It is so modern and bright. I like simple quilting that supports the overall lines and yours does that wonderfully. Ha! I can't throw away those little hst's either, and look what you made with it! I love those fairies... fabric... I love a good fairy image mixing human faces with whimsy

How wonderful to have a squirrel, that produces a squirrel and uses up scraps. Wow you hit a homerun here with this project. I really like it on the patio table. I also really like the faerie :-) beside the international sisters. I still need to make that block, or do four like you did. Looks so good on the wall.

What great fun - I love the look of the quilt on your patio table! And that little mini quilt with leftover HSTs is perfect! I have Dueling Banjos in my head now, by the way. Haha!

Nothing wrong with chasing squirrels if you actually catch them! Nice table topper and quilting you caught!

I do like fairies anywhere although in Ireland they are sometimes evil little creatures who even steal babies! I don't care for that kind of fairy! What a sweet little wall hanging. I think Blackberry fairies are the nice kind. And you reminded me that somewhere I have some of that Michael Miller fairy fabric that is a panel for making a Christmas Tree skirt.

Definitely BFFs!
Seems like there are a lot more squirrels running loose lately, doesn't it? I know my sewing room is chock full of them!

Your table topper is yummy on your back porch table! So summery! A cute way to use some cut off triangles. I keep saving mine, but haven’t done anything with them yet. I have my eye on a quilt from Amanda Jean Nygard’s book, “No Scrap Left Behind! “

Now this was a fun to read and you managed to create two lovely little projects. The picture of the squirrels on the top could not have been more apt. Have a fun Sunday.

I seem to have an entire army of battling squirrels in my sewing room this year! My intentions are often stronger than my follow through. I love your table topper! Such a good idea for a quick, easy project. I have an entire basket (it's a small one) filled with the triangle I cut off from binding strips and other snippets. I love to make pin cushions out of them, although while they are small, they do take up as much time as a larger project, lol. Fun, fun!
