I've never made an all blue quilt, and seldom work with batiks either. So when I won this beautiful blue bundle of batiks in Michele's giveaway last fall, I wasn't sure what I would do with it.
Thanks again, Michele!
Until I saw Sandra's Centred quilt and learned she was going to have a quilt along for this pattern! Perfect!
A whole quilt of quarter log cabins, with a 3-D sort of effect going on in the center - I wanted to try that!
On the design wall.
And now, finished!
40.5 x 40.5 inches
The blue batik bundle worked great to make these blocks! At first I tried to plan out which fat quarters would be the darks and the mediums, but I really just ended up making two blocks at a time and trying to make sure there was a good contrast between each round of strips. This gave the design a "mirror image" look with blocks opposite each other in each quadrant.
I did have to buy an additional blue batik for the binding and ended up using some of it on the back, too.
These adorable lady scientists,
found at Joann's, make up the rest of the backing!
I quilted Blue in a square spiral
using a light blue Gutermann thread.
Thank you, Sandra, for a another great QAL! This was my second year joining in, and you can be sure I'll look forward to the next one, too.
I love this quilt, and I have a special person in mind to give it to.
I can't wait to surprise her!

Beautiful! Be sure to use several Color Catchers when you wash it, though. I have a dark blue batik I bought for a back and have washed it multiple times and it still bleeds onto the catcher. Color me blue ....
As I read about the makings of this quilt, I chuckled. I too don't sew much with blue (except with RSC) and very rarely do I sew with batiks. I love your Blue Quilt and my sister, who ADORES blue, would love this one too! I hope you include the link to the quilt parade when it occurs as I would love to see what the others did. Thanks for sharing!
I would say you picked the perfect fabric for this quilt. It is scrumptious! Love that tree shot:)
it turned out great - I don't usually do two color quilts either and have been happy with my blue/cream also
Gorgeous finish, Diann, and a fabulous gift!!
Nicely done and super that you have a home for it already. I have about 20" of binding left to sew down and then I'll get my pics posted.
Wow, this turned out just fantastic! I love the tree shot (of course I do) and that it is going to be a special gift. :-) If those are Island Batik batiks, they'll be just fine. I've not had a problem with them ever. I love the lady (woot woot!) scientist backing fabric! Thank you so much for quilting along again with me!
The blues in your quilt are so pretty. It really turned out well in this design. Nice finish!
What a beautiful quilt you made! Love the colors and the pattern. I can't wait for blue month to come up again.... I have some blue batiks.....
It's perfect! The contrast level is spot on.
A beautiful quilt, I love it and I'm sure the special person you have in mind will love it too!
It's so beautiful! Or is that beau-blue-tiful? The fabrics are just gorgeous, and of course Sandra's pattern lets them truly shine. Great finish, Diann :)
Wow! It's a gorgeous finish! You picked the perfect fabrics for that pattern. Congrats on a beautiful finish.
