To-Do Tuesday #156: Lots of WiPs and Autumn Jubilee, too!

There's been quite a lot going on in my sewing room lately, and sometimes even I wonder where all these projects come from!  Fortunately, a little sewing every day helps me make progress on each project.

  • The last two blocks were made for Masala Box and this is my current layout for them.

  • The Frosties came back out again, and I've been sewing the sashing and cornerstones onto the blocks, and sewing the rows together.

  • Almost up to 20 blue crumb blocks!

  • I did shop for some yardage to make a backing for Full Stop, but it's still in the bag with no photos yet.  Hopefully more progress on that for next week!

And then there's Autumn Jubilee!  Every October, Carole at From My Carolina Home hosts this fun event, which includes sewing and quilting projects, along with Autumn-themed cooking, books to read, and gardening posts.  I've been joining in for quite a few years, and this year is no different!  The first directions for the Autumn Jubilee QAL are out, and I've chosen my fabric and gotten started with cutting squares and making HSTs.

These fat quarters are from the bundle I brought home from our trip to Oregon.
The selvage I found on one of them says Painted Patchwork by Sue Zipkin for Clothworks.
I chose the prints from the bundle that had a fall feel to me, and they should be fun to play with for this QAL.  The next directions come out on Friday!

For the coming week, I'll be trying to focus on just a few things:
  • Make the backing for Full Stop
  • Get all the Frosty blocks sewn into a quilt top
  • Keep going on the Autumn Jubilee QAL project!

Slow stitching on a Sunday

Although I spent several evenings on a small hand-pieced project this week (more about that later in the month), I did make lots of progress on Autumn Brew, too.  Just two leaves left! (On the far right there...)

This won't take too long to finish up.

Meanwhile, the next design is traced so that I can stitch some pumpkins this month!

Looking forward to some slow stitching today!

Pulling out the light greens...

Starting the week, I had two more Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects that needed light green blocks so they could be finished up for the year.  I started with the hand-pieced plus blocks - I had made three of them in our previous green month, so three more were all I needed.

I decided that 49 blocks would make a good layout because these blocks are rectangular, and here they are all together on the design wall.

Next step is to sew these into groups of twos and fours,
so they'll go into a project box for my evening hand stitching time.

The other blocks I worked on were for Masala Box.  Just two light green blocks needed to get to 20 total.

I put these blocks up on the design wall next, just putting color groups together.  I'm not sure what kind of layout I want for them, but definitely need to spread out the greens and blues a bit!

These should sew up into a top pretty quickly!

I Like Thursday #304

Good morning!

It's getting to be that time of year when I can
see some pretty sunrises from the front window.
I don't know if you can tell, but the neighbor's work truck
matches the leaves on the tree that's right there!

I love apples!  They've always been one of my favorite fruits.  There was an interesting article in the New York Times recently about apples,  and I learned a lot from it about the amazing number of varieties there are (evidently some 7500 of them!)  and how researchers are continuously combining them for more and tastier apples.

In our backyard there is an apple tree, one we planted when we were young and naive homeowners many years ago.  Many of the apples fall on the ground, but it also provides food for the birds, squirrels, and insects, and sometimes for us!

I believe these are Jonathan apples, although don't hold me to that!
This tree has been here at least 40 years.

One of my favorite things to do with these apples is make applesauce.  I located my mom's old (possibly antique now?!) Foley Food Mill, which makes it a lot easier to make applesauce out of these small apples.

I made enough to give some away and put a few containers in the freezer.  It turned out pretty good - no sugar needed and a great flavor.  Makes the house smell good while you're cooking the apples, too!

I'm really wanting to make this little apple mini quilt from Sassafras Lane Designs, but instead this week, I made a heart mini quilt to give to a special person at my mom's place.  I shared the in-progress photo in my Tuesday post, and here it is all finished and ready to give to her today.

I suppose a heart might remind you of a Red Delicious apple, though, right?

Have a great day!

To-Do Tuesday #155

Good morning, and happy Tuesday!   It's To-Do Tuesday at Texas Quilt Gal - thanks, Linda for hosting this fun link-up each week!

I've been plugging right along this week, and finished up the Bloom quilt top!  It's a small one, about 48 inches square, but has been a great learning experience for an on point setting.

I've continued making crumb blocks from the blue bin.  I'm up to 14 now!  The goal is 20 and then I'll add the sashing that turns them into candy blocks.  Most recent photo is here.

I had to take a time out for a quick mini quilt that I want to give to a special person who works at my mom's place.  She just announced her retirement, and will really be missed.

I thought a heart would be appropriate,
and the gingham for backing and binding.
This one needs a special label, too!

So, what's on the list for this week?
  • Now that it's October, the last color needed for the Masala Box quilt is light green, and two blocks are needed for that.
  • I need to get some yardage for backing on the Full Stop Quilt- it's time to get that one layered for quilting.
  • Keep making blue crumb blocks!
  • I haven't forgotten about the Frosties and sewing on the sashing and cornerstones - they're still on the list!
There's always something to work on!

Slow stitching this week...

Some hand quilting stitches were put into the hexie flower quilt.  I think I only have a couple blocks left to finish and then the sashing and borders.

I also got started on "Autumn Brew" this week, and it's going to be fun!  There are a lot of browns (stems and acorns) and a bit of orange/dark green variegated (leaves), so I've done a little coloring in places to bring out the different shades and shapes.

Yesterday Kathy Schmitz sent out the October One Stitch at a Time design, and it's adorable!  I know I'm going to want to make it, so I'd better get busy today and stitch up all those leaves in the tea cup!

The end of September...

I finished up our light blue month sewing up scraps of blue in every shade from purple to light aqua.  So far, 12 crumb blocks have appeared in the 7.5 inch-ish range.  I'll trim them to 6.5 inch squares for the candy blocks.

Do you think I can get 20 total (so eight more blocks) out of these scraps?  They appear to be never-ending!

The other accomplishment this week has been getting to an almost-a-quilt-top with the Bloom baskets.   I've taken my time putting these together because I'm not particularly experienced with on point settings and didn't want to turn anything wrong!  Looks like I'm on the right track here!

Would you guys recommend I sew those two corner triangles
before or after I sew the two long seams?

Onward to October!

I would really like to finish this quilt, the Full Stop Sampler!  I have a recipient in mind for it, and it's been hanging around in quilt top form for way too long.  Just need the backing fabric!
