Cool Blues for a Hot July

It's been really hot here the last couple days...

Fortunately, my sewing room is in the basement, which for us is the coolest part of the house, so it's been a good place to spend part of each afternoon.  Early in the week, I finished up my hand-pieced 4th of July tabletopper with some hand quilting and scrappy dark blue binding.

It fits perfectly on the little square table where I keep all my stitching supplies.  I'm using the little penguin pouch with it for supply storage and even made a tiny new pincushion for the table, too.

I also prepped (and have been sewing) a dark blue scrappy trips block.  The others I made previously were mostly lighter blues, so this will be a good addition to the project.

These are also hand-pieced.

Every month I've been adding two chandelier blocks in the RSC color of the month, so I stitched those up this week, too.  They're really quick!

Here's the whole group - 14 of them.

These are hard to photograph!  The dark blue and purple blocks look black, but I promise they are not!  I do they think they will make a pretty *something* - probably a tablerunner.

And one other thing I worked on - the start of my July Table Scraps project - these little string blocks in dark blues and browns.  They're 3.5 inches square!

More about these next week!

The weather this year has been insane! Basements are very helpful. I love your 4th of July table topper, and those adorable chandelier blocks, but the little string ones--wow! so cute! Stay cool!

Great start on the darks this month. Sewing in the basement with those outside temps is probably the coolest place to be!

You have some beautiful blues in your stash. We have had cooler rainy/misty days this past week, in fact one day I actually had to put on my jeans instead of shorts. Good days to sew.

quite a variety of blocks - the heat has been terrible in some places it is nice that you have a basement that you use that is cooler. I know a lot of houses in the northern states and mountains do not have A/C is that how it is for you?

Hi Diann! Your planned fun-day last week looks FAB. I love the hike/lunch/quilt shop/wine idea. Sue and I need to make a plan for something like that ourselves - thanks for the idea. I can't believe it is still so hot by you - 104?!!! That's NUTS. Your topper for the 4th looks just fab - so simply perfect. The chandelier blocks remind me a lot of the International Sister blocks (without the arms/hands!) and your layout for them is so fun. Great projects all the way around. ~smile~ Roseanne

Red white and blue is pretty... and then I saw the aqua blocks. I like those ones best!

You can never go wrong with strings. I don't know why I'm crazy for strings.

Thr patriotic quilt is beautiful, and I love the way you hand quilted it.

Hopefully you've gotten some relief from the heat by now. We're rainy & cool this weekend but then 🎵🎶 "The Heat is On" 🎵🎵 once again. You've got some very pretty blocks going and, of course, I'm happy to see more strings!

Your little string blocks are so darn cute. Nice job. Yikes we're half way through July and I have an idea for Table Scraps this month but I haven't done a darn thing about it! (Or friendship star blocks either.) I need to switch gears and work on these two projects. Have a great weekend.
