Table Scraps in Yellow

I'm on a quest this year to use up some of these charm squares I've accumulated in the last few years.  Some are full charm packs and others are left from a partially used charm pack.

To accomplish that quest, I've decided to make a placemat every month in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month.  For February that's yellow.   I happened to have a charm pack that is all in gray, white, and yellow that I won in a giveaway from mmmquilts a few years ago when I participated in one of Sandra's QALs.  Choosing a few favorite prints from that charm pack, I also added in a couple more yellow squares and some white ones and made two fourteen inch 9 patches.  Thinking I would use a Disappearing 9 Patch design, I cut them like this.

Recently, I flipped my reversible cutting mat over to the clean (but very pink!) side.  It's a wonderful new surface for cutting, but I'm not liking the pink...

Not quite inspired yet, I cut each square again on the diagonal.

Sewing these blocks back together gave me a 12 inch square with a neat design, plus two extra rectangles.

Using both of those rectangles was going to give a piece that was too big for my placemat size of 12 x 16.  So what to do?

Cut those rectangular pieces again!  I took off a 2.5 inch strip from each and added that to either side of the center square.

Some simple quilting and a yellow binding and all finished!

Maybe you're wondering what happened to the leftover pieces from the blocks on the front?  I pieced them into the back, so this placemat is actually reversible!

So now there are two:

LOVE how you merged the D9P with the Magic Stars tutorial found on my blog, Diann! That made a really cool design for your February TABLE SCRAPS Challenge project.

So clever! The recipient will have both sides to enjoy. Congratulations on the finish and thanks for sharing the process with us.

Wow what fun to do your own "disappearing" thing on those 9-patches! Very pretty and nice pattern. Love the placemat idea for the monthly colors.

Well, that was clever! That is a good plan, placemats per month! DH doesn’t much care for placemats, but I do! We have a puzzle on the dining room table, so placemats have become lap mats as we eat in the living room! I love your improv placemat!

How fun is that! Very clever and a sunny placemat for your table. (Love the reversible.... my family tends to dribble a lot!)

How clever. When I first saw the blocks sitting on the lavender cutting mat, I thought that lavender would make an interesting sashing with the blocks. Then you took it in a whole other direction. We don't eat at the table (it's covered with my husband's clutter) so don't use placemats very much. I'm working my way through the various tables and chests in the house to make my Table Scraps. Just posted my yellow one to IG.

I thought I knew where you were going with the disappearing 9-Patch but there's a twist in the story. I love it!! It becomes a very interesting block. The back is as lovely as the front. I so love yellow and grey. Congratulations on this creative placemat. ;^)

Lovely! And right on trend for color with the grey and yellow, aren't those the Pantone colors of the year?

Great idea with the place mats! We always need a little project or two going don't we?!
I look forward to seeing all the colored placemats together! ( Unless they are gifted first of course!)
Stay safe and sew on !

What sweet placemats. I might have some leftover blocks from BOM I should use to make a few for my local charity.

Pretty placemats. I would've never thought to cut the squares again on the diagonal. Worked out perfectly!

I'm going to use up some of the "good stuff" this year as well. My turkey blocks will be using the charm squares I collected in a couple of swaps of dots, circles, and swirls. I've been using the tiny scraps for a long time and it's time to use the fun stuff!

Good for you for being proactive on those charms. They will be a great beginning for your placemat work. I love how you sliced and diced until you had something you love. (I love it too.) Here's a link to a small quilt that uses charm squares.... https://static1.squarespace.com/static/545031cee4b037e1ac4b10c0/t/5574bdfce4b071237c3a4d64/1433714172366/Charm+Squares+-+Elizabeth+Hartman.pdf

It looks super easy and will use a goodly number of squares.... Have fun.

Sweet place-mat, and in this year's colours too! You've been very creative dividing your disappearing 9-patch even more than usual, to great advantage.

Love the placemat/s. Couldn’t “see” the pattern for the corners, so glad you showed the diagonal cuts after the first piecing.

Perfect! Love the double sided aspect.
