When one project leads to another...

 a November Table Scraps project!

I was just finishing up Starburst when I started to think about this month's Table Scraps Challenge project, and the leftover blue Grunge in "Sea" that I used to make the quarter star blocks was still out.  Further back than that, I originally used this Grunge for the sashing and binding on Pieces of My Life, finished back in February.

November's extra challenge from the Joyful Quilter is to make something inspired by our favorite book or movie.  Reading is one my most favorite activities - I can't remember a time when I didn't love books and reading - so I knew I was going to go with something about books.  But - what favorite book?  There are too many to name!  So I decided to make something inspired by my favorite book source - our local public library!

I started by making two bookshelf quilt blocks.  The blue Grunge became the bookshelves!

When planning what this was going to turn into, I decided to only put the end of the shelf on one side of the block.  That's because I sewed them together into a panel, then sewed up the sides and boxed the bottom, so it would stand up.

Then I got busy and didn't take any more photos, but I did add shoulder straps and a lining, and turned these scraps into a book bag, to carry books to and from the library!

A view of the other side of the bag - I like that text fabric!

And here are the three connected projects!

Since this is the Little Penguin blog, and there are penguins on the book bag, I will share a favorite penguin book with you!   Click on the link for a little summary of the story from Goodreads.

Your penguin book made me SMILE! I love the idea of using your scraps to make a book bag! I've been going through your posts (been busy here) and loving the finished quilts, the embroidered heart block, the Christmas Cats and the backing for that wall hanging! So much fun! Hoping you are having a safe and happy holiday!

What a great solution to the challenge. I too loved "How the Penguins Saved Veronica."

How clever you are, Diann. And, of course , a book bag for the retired librarian is a need accessory (although I'm sure you have others). I just picked up Louise Penny's newest, the Black Wolf.

I remember from a young age reading and reading - checking out books from our school library was something I did every week on Friday to make sure I had books for the weekend. My girls continued the tradition - we had a lovely Aunt who was a librarian and she sure encouraged us from a young age - my parents were always so busy raising too many kids that they never really sat down and read to us or encouraged us in school - I guess they were just overwhelmed - thanks heavens for Aunt Bev who we saw weekly on Saturdays or Sundays for lunch and arts/crafts/reading - we were the children she didn't have until she hit 40!! then she got married and inherited a family and finally had a baby of her own (plus 9 step-children)

Your book bag is so pretty Diann! I love how it came together. Drawing inspiration from your local library is such a clever idea.
That book sounds really good and sweet.

That's a great twist on Joy's challenge and practical too. Expect people at the library to ask you "where did you get this wonderful bag?" a lot. Enjoy! ;^)

It's a terrific color in all of the projects. That bag turned out so cute! Books are my "other" passion besides quilting. Like you I can't remember a time my nose was not buried in a book. In every house I've lived in as an adult, it's never home until there are book shelves holding my favorites.

Oh, you've warmed the heart of this quilting librarian! Love the bag. And the penguins.

What a fun block and bag! It take such creativity to make such a great challenge project.

Oh my word! Love the bag! I checked out the book & it's shelved as To Read by one of my book club pals, so maybe it can be in our future. And if you are on goodreads, we should be friends!

When I saw the sneak peek at your TSC project I knew there were books involved. I’m still working on mine. Company today, so no sewing! I’ll have to burn the midnight oil to get a finish. 🤣 Cute bag and useful project. You can never have too many bags!

I love how you played with words and fabrics! Nice job! I loved How the Penguins Saved Veronica as well! Your post reminds me of another delightful book: When You Give a Mouse a Cookie as well as the theory of six degrees! You made me smile tonight!

What a wonderful choice for the table scraps prompt! Instead of choosing one book you chose ALL the books!! And now you have a sturdy, practical, lovely bag to take your treasures to and from the library. Nice going!

Such a lovely family of quilt projects, Diann! One that led to scraps, another that led to smaller scrap, and the one that made use up some of those leftover. What better project for the favorite book or movie than a book bag to cart books back and forth to the library? Good thinking!
