I Like Thursday #445

Good morning and happy Thursday!  Since I didn't really do an I Like Thursday post last week because I was participating in the Christmas in July blog hop,  I have some catching up to do.

Little by little my gardening efforts are paying off!  LeeAnna's question of the week for last week was about favorite summer foods, and, of course, anything fresh out of the garden is on my list.  We've been getting cucumbers, and I have taken a liking to tzatziki sauce.  So here is younger son making it for me.  We put it on grilled chicken pitas.

Tzatziki has cucumber, plain yogurt, dill, mint, lemon juice,
and a few other spices.
Yummy!

The tomatoes are starting!  I've eaten exactly two cherry tomatoes so far, but lots more are coming.

And the Colorado peaches are here!  My favorite locally grown fruit of all time.  I slice one on my cereal each morning and it's like having dessert for breakfast!

I read the best book this week.  The Things We Keep by Sally Hepworth.  It's about a young woman who develops early-onset Alzheimers.  I know that doesn't sound like it would make for a great story, but it is written so well.  It helped me understand some things about dealing with dementia, too, which is a big part of my world these days.

Today's question of the week is about our summers growing up.  What did we do for fun, work, travel?  Some of those memories are a bit hazy anymore, but I'm sure I hung out with friends, went swimming, read a lot of books.  I did a lot of babysitting to earn money.  And every summer we went to visit the grandparents in Iowa for two weeks.  My dad grew up in Iowa City and my mom grew up in Cedar Rapids, and they are just maybe 30 miles apart, so it made an easy visit for both sides of the family.

See the Amana Colonies to the left there?
We often went there for good meals and the interesting shops!

Speaking of travel, we are going up in the mountains for a few days, so if you don't hear from me, it's because I'm off the grid, lol!  Looking forward to getting together with my brother and sister and their spouses and seeing some beautiful sights.  See you back here soon!

Reaping the benefits of the garden is so wonderful! We'll be picking a few more cuc's in a couple days. Looks like we have the same cherry tomatoes growing in a string like formation, haven't had that before with cherry ones.

Don't know why I've never tried Tzatziki since I love everything in it. So glad your tomatoes are coming on, there is nothing quite like it. Oh those peaches! By the time I found out there is a self-pick peach orchard about 20 miles from us, they were already out of peaches. I'll remember for next year. Will you be camping or staying in a hotel?

Oh that sounds like a great getaway with family. You are also doing great with the food growing, something I wish I'd started when I arrived on this land. I really should look into the tomatoes, something I love. A son that cooks is definitely an asset in life! I want to read that book too. Dementia is on the rise so worrisome for me.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are wonderful especially when homegrown or fresh from the farm. Tzatziki sauce would be very tasty on a chicken pita. I haven't had that in years. I wish you a lovely weekend with your family, Diann. Hugs.

we stopped at the Amana Colonies once and enjoyed it. Peaches are here too right now I had just seen a sign for a pick your own recently and thought they will be lucky to get anyone stop as hot as it has been. I love Tzatziki sauce but I have made any - I like to stop and get a Gyro now and then which of course has the sauce on them

Have a great time with your siblings and spouses. I like Tzatziki sauce. I first tasted it at Pita Jungle in Phoenix. I’ve never ever tried to make it on my own. I have 4 small green tomatoes. I’m hoping for a small harvest. Fun post.

I use Tzatziki sauce as a dip with cut-up veggies. Have a great time on your getaway. Also good to spend time with siblings.

Tzatziki is one of my favorites, though I've never made it. That is something I'll look into. Glad to see you are getting some tomatoes. We've been eating a lot of Georgia and South Carolina peaches lately.
