It's one of those weeks where I'll feel lucky if I get 15 minutes of sewing time each day. I wish I could say this has to do with holiday busy-ness, but it doesn't. My sister and I had to take a deep breath yesterday, and have Mom admitted to hospice care. It doesn't mean that anything is imminent, but it does mean that they will provide comfort care for her at this stage of life. But it is a big step to take. I hope I'll get to some sewing - it sure helps me to have something else to concentrate on, even if just for a little while.
What I really want to work on are the next steps on Pieces of My Life, and I am making slow progress on that. First, I finished the quilting on section two, and then I started in on the steps to attach the top two sections of the quilt together. Here's how it looks on the back. The two sections are connected with a two inch strip of sashing.
Because I'm using leftover strips of the backing for this process,
you would hardly know it's there!
Flipping the quilt over to the front, you see this - a strip of batting in that space between the two sections, and the blue sashing sewed to the left top section of the quilt.
The next step is to do some pressing and get this sashing strip sewn over the batting section and top-stitched down to the other side. Here it's just finger pressed over, but you get the idea!
The blue sashing is going to make an interesting design through the quilt - I'm hoping it will look like a big bow tying up a patchwork package!
As time allows during the second half of this week, I'm planning to get this step finished and then move on to layering up the third and fourth sections of the project so they can be quilted. I also want to spend some time on my Table Scraps project for December.
Fingers crossed that there will be some time to get to those tasks!

Happy Wednesday, Diann. What a blessing it is that you and your sister are there for your Mom. It is good to hear that she is in good care. It is so fascinating to see Pieces of My Life being pieced together. What pretty backing fabric you are using too- it is so vintagey looking. I wish you a lovely rest of the week. Hope you get to spend time working on this beauty. Hugs.
Sorry to hear about your mom. It's tough making those decisions. My mother did a lot of QAYG so I'm going to look at one of my quilts to see If she used the same technique.
Aww, no wonder you had to take a deep breath. I am sure it is a good move for your Mom and you and your family, but those are tough decisions
The way you put the quilt together looks so neat! I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
sorry to hear your mom has reached that stage it is tough. I have never done quilt as you go have fun with it. Keeping busy can help you through these tough times.
Diann, my heart goes out to you and your sister. You've provided so much comfort to your mother in recent years. May the next stage be worry-free for all of you.
That is a tough step. I'm sending you and your sister hugs. I like where your QAYG going!
I'm so sorry to read this about your mom. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision to make, but thankfully, you have your sister to help decide what is best. Your quilt is coming along nicely. I'm intrigued by the QAYG method. Thank you for sharing.
I know that these decisions are tough. Sounds like you have family support and that makes it easier. Sewing always helps me when other life things get tough. I wish you the same! I really like how Pieces of My Life is coming together. “Hugs”
Oh, Diann, what a tough week for you. I do know that sewing and quilting help me to process all of my emotions. I hope that you get the time. Your Pieces/Life quilt is looking lovely! Blessings and Hugs, Melva
So sorry to hear that you and your sister have had to take the step of admitting your mom to hospice care. Enjoy the season and togetherness as much as possible. It’s heartening to see all the lovely comments people are sending you. I’m sure it’s because we feel as though we all know her a bit through your blog. Big hugs…
Oh Diann I am so sorry you had to make that big decision and at the same time it's good that she will receive the best care needed. Hugs to you and your family. Sending up good thoughts for all.
Diann, from everything I have read, all of you will benefit from the hospice service. It relieves some of the burden from your shoulders, provides your Mom with needed care and supports the family emotionally. Coming during the holiday season makes the decision even harder, but it's the right thing to do. Hopefully, your quilting when you can manage it, will bring your comfort, too.

It is so precious that your Mom, your sister, and you all have each other! May you all be blessed with a very warm, joyous and loving Christmas!
Oh Diann, I'm so sorry that you had to move your mom to hospice. It is a big decision, and certainly not an easy one - an emotional one, for sure. I'm so glad she is close to. you and your sister. I'm glad you have some nice quilting projects to take yuor mind off things, even for a little bit. I like that blue sashing between those blocks, it really makes them pop!
It's such a hard step to take. Sending a hug and prayers. Your Pieces of My Life is coming together. Hope you can find some comfort in stitching.
I empathize with your hard decision. We had to have my Mom placed in one as well almost 6 years ago; she has Alzheimer's. We moved her from Canada back to the states when her husband had to go in and hadn't planned for her. But she is in better health and mood. I can hope it will help your mom as well. Blessings to you and hopefully you can quilt more.
