In the hoop...

After a slow start on hand quilting the Dancing Plus quilt top this week, I think I'm on the right track.

I've never used a hoop for hand quilting before, but on this quilt, things weren't going well, and I had to rip out some rows of stitching.   So I went and bought a 14 inch hoop and changed my stitching design idea.

The background of this quilt is pretty busy, so it's hard to show the quilting,
but I am stitching an X through the plusses and a horizontal line through the rectangles.

I've had to do some thinking and planning to figure which direction to go so that I don't have too many stops and starts.  Not sure you can even tell, but I'm lightly marking the quilting lines with a Frixion pen.

Ready to go for some slow stitching on this Sunday!

Sharing at Kathy's Quilts.

Years ago I bought a Morgan hoop on a stand. Never got the knack of it. I have a couple of small projects I plan to hand quilt. Maybe it's time to give it another try.

Looks like you are off to a good start. Good luck with your big hoop. I wonder how the Q-Snaps would be for quilting - I like them for embroidery and cross stitch. Libby's Morgan hoop sounds interesting too.

About 40 years ago I tried hand quilting in a hoop, it was a disaster. I had no idea what I was doing and I had so many puckers. I ripped it all and got rid of the hoop and tied the quilt! So I send you good wishes for success with yours:)

I like quilting in a hoop. This quilt looks like it is just about the right size for it. I think you quilt plan is perfect for those pluses. Enjoy your stitching.

When I first started quilting I always used a hoop. Now I have gotten out of practice and have to relearn how to do it!

I think the hoop I had when I started was 14 inches I always loved it :) I always started in the middle of the quilt and worked my way out

I love this quilt and am so happy you are hand quilting this treasure! Great idea to lightly mark the stitching lines. I also use a 14" hoop and love it!

It looks great to me. I've never done hand quilting and not sure I'd like to either.

Glad you were able to find a hoop that size. Hope it works well for you. The stitching is looking great. Sometimes I use a hera tool to mark straight lines. It just makes a crease in the fabric. Have a good Sunday.

Great project to work on. I am not used to using a hoop either. But then again I rarely hand quilt.

I admire those who can hand-quilt. That is not a skill set I possess. Love the quilt top!

I have hand-quilted precisely three projects (two in 1974 and one in 1999). I admire your ability to do so. And, as I said earlier, I do like your plus design.

Your hand stitches look great, Diann! Very even which is most important. Have fun!
