A Design Wall!

My sewing room overhaul of the past week left me an empty wall to use as a design wall.  And I am enjoying it already!

After picking the brains of a couple trusted quilty advisors, I ended up doing something extremely simple.  I bought 2.5 yards of 72 inch wide white felt, which was on sale at Joann's for $3.99 a yard, and stapled it up on the wall.  Inexpensive, but effective!

After squaring up one end of the yardage, I ended up with a design wall that is 72 x 90, and it is working really well!

Just for fun, I put up the Northern Lights blocks which I've made so far, the Stack and Cut squares I've been making out of a Bonnie and Camille layer cake, and my Tiny Tuesday blocks.  There's lots of space on this wall, and nothing falls off!

The design wall is on the west wall of my room.  When you turn to the north, here's what you see.  I moved the cutting table over there.

Our house was built in the 70s, and back then everyone *had* to have a fireplace.  Nowadays (and, really, for quite a long time), we don't use it anymore.

Here's the east wall - and around the corner to the south, too, where my storage is.

Those walls are looking a little bare, but I have lots of mini quilts to put back up - and most likely I will make more, too!  :)

Thanks for coming along on this tour of my sewing room makeover.  Hope you enjoy some stitching time today!

we rarely use our fireplace either but that is because if we do that room stays warm and the room next to it but the back rooms freeze! also the wood fire makes my allergies worse to the point of having a sinus headache all day.
I hope your design wall will work out and that it won't sag after awhile from the weight of the blocks. On mine over insulation board I can stick pins in if needed as the quilt grows larger so it won't fall off the wall.
It sure must be nice having a nice new large space to work.

Great design wall, you are lucky to have a wall where you can put up the felt! My space has windows and closets and doors all over, no place to any kind of wall. So, I have to make do with my cutting table or a cardboard mat placed over the longarm as a layout space.

Your sewing room looks like a great place to create! And the entertainment center is perfect for entertaining all your fabric stash, lol. Time to create something new now!

Hurrah for a "new" sewing room. I bet your inspiration juice is flowing now. It looks very nice and will be even better with a few minis on the walls. Enjoy! ;^)

I'd love a big room like that! There is nothing like having a big design wall for all your projects big and small! I've always loved having fireplaces in my home, but there is a certain mess and danger that comes with them! Our current home has one with gas logs and we love it! Enjoy your new space! I'm sure your days will be filled with creativity!

I am so jealous of your design wall--that is the only thing I don't have space for in my sewing room. When my daughter completely leaves the nest, I will move into her room where I can leave both my machines set up and have a design wall...

Good idea for the design wall. I have batting stitched on a curtain. It worked well for quite awhile, but lately, things are falling off. Maybe it's time to consider felt. Even though you don't use your fireplace, it looks so cozy in your room.

Your design wall and sewing space looks great. You are going to love having that wall in place and getting to see your blocks as you make them. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

I enjoyed your tour. I didn't realize you had a fireplace! Makes it look very inviting. Great choice on the design wall, and it looks wonderful! I had my husband cut an insulation foam board, which he tacked on my wall, then I covered it with flannel. The flannel has been up for about a year, and it is so thin that it is sagging and my fabric often falls off, so I'm going to follow your example and go with felt!

How wonderful! I have a computer desk in my sewing room, but it's full of Hubster's files and stuff. I do have 2 shelves and the desk area for my use, but I could squirrel away so much more in those other compartments! LOL

Great studio makeover. I wish I had a design wall. There is one wall that would work in my studio but my Koala sewing cabinet takes up so much room that I haven't figured out how to arrange the furniture so I can access the wall easily.
