I Like Thursday #440

No-bunny has been bothering my garden this week, thankfully!  Actually, maybe it's due to generous sprinkling of cayenne pepper around the plants?  Thank you, Vicki, for that advice!

For more welcome wildlife sightings this week, we went down to a natural area that we like to visit near us to see the yellow-headed blackbirds that nest there.  We enjoy this little field trip every year at the end of May/beginning of June.  We take a picnic lunch and walk the trail around the pond.

These birds make the most distinctive sound.

A beautiful big pelican was also visiting the area!  This is younger son's photo - didn't it turn out neat?

And there was a huge bullfrog.  He was a little suspicious of us, but I promise we didn't bother him.

LeeAnna's question of the week is about going to sleep away camp.  Have I gone - yes!  I grew up being a Girl Scout and that was one of the fun experiences.  I found one photo of "way back then."  I remember liking the tents we slept in.  They were up on wooden platforms with canvas sides that you could roll up when it was warm.  We slept in our sleeping bags on cots - maybe four or six girls to a tent?

A date stamp on the back says 1964.
That's me in the center with the curly hair.

I remember enjoying the crafts and cooking activities.  We wove lanyards like these - you can still find YouTube videos that show how to do this.  I googled "camp crafts!"

I've never seen a yellow-headed blackbirds; they are pretty. The only blackbirds we see are the "grackles" in the parking lots in town. Glad you solved your bunny problems. Your camp photo is cute.

All your nature photos are really good. Sounds like a perfect way to spend a spring day. I did a sleep away church camp one year because our elderly neighbors wanted to send us. It wasn't a good experience for many reasons, the first being I didn't really want to go.

I loved Scout camp so much I was a counselor one year.

Younger son's pelican photo is awesome! I bet Girl Scout camp was fun. Looks like you girls were on task with camp set up from your photo!

I've not had much luck with cayenne pepper, but it was chipmunks and voles I was trying to discourage. That pelican photo is terrific! I love the camping photo, too. We did friendship bracelets with embroidery floss. So much fun!

I had heard of using the pepper but never really heard if it worked well. I love the pelican I hadn't seen any in awhile now. I was in the Brownie's for a year or two but when I was going to start Girl Scouts we had moved to the country and it was too far for dad to get me back and forth after a busy day of work - back then they thought of that - and dad's rest was more important than after school activities.

Oh wow, a friend just sent me a photo of the yellow headed blackbird. I have never seen one before. That's twice in one day now!

I sure enjoyed your post! I wonder if cayenne pepper will reduce snails? Going to have to add that to my garden and see. For now we use pie tins filled with beer, they die happy, I hope. :)

I've never seen a yellow headed blackbird and will check out if they even get this far north. Neat bird and I got to see pelicans in Floriday...amazing size. I tried cayenne pepper for deer but it didn't work. I think the Girl Guides is pretty much the same as Girl Scouts. That is a wonderful photo of you and your pretty hair. What great memories, heh.
