Hard to believe it's November already, but here we are. Time to make plans for finishing some Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts. That always means sewing some blocks together. I started with my hand-pieced bowties.
I decided to pull out the first two rows and sew them into fours. It's helpful to have the layout photo available, or I'm likely to turn a block or two the wrong way! (Ask me how I know this, lol!)
After I sew rows 1 and 2 into four patches, I'll get out 3 and 4 and do the same thing.
Then my plan is to make giant four patches out of 16 bowties.
At the machine, I worked on the first two rows of the Split Nines. This project definitely has a specific layout that I want, so I'm doing the same thing - keeping the photo handy and following it closely.
My favorite thing at this point in the year is to revisit all the blocks and remember the fun scraps that have been used. Like this one - it's from a Little Red Riding Hood print that I got from Bernie's shop several years ago. This little square has the wolf in it!
I've added one more holiday 16 Across block to my collection - they work great as leaders and enders!

I tend to take a photo and refer back to it when piecing a top together as well. For the 16 across blocks - are you making them as 4 patches? Looks like 2 sets of dark and then 2 sets with 3 light and one dark? Happy stitching this weekend.

Yes…it is time to finish up our RSC projects. The year has flown by! I love how you are putting your split 9 patches together. The bow ties quilt is going to be fun too. Enjoy your time at the machine.

I too take photos when I am working on something especially the ones you have to take down and put away part way through. Really looking forward to seeing your split nines finished.
You're right - it's fun to revisit those blocks we made earlier in the year as we put the tops together. Love how those first rows are looking! Scrappy quilts are just the best.

Those quilts will be lovely! I use photos to get layouts right, too. Sadly, I usually still find a way to mess it up! Lol!
Those are going to be two eye catching tops soon. It is fun to look back at the scraps. I too take photos and still manage to turn a block "creatively!"

I've been watching your split nine quilt blocks and love how you are arranging them. I can't wait to see the finished flimsy. This is one pattern that I hope to try in the near future. What are the finished size of those blocks and the bowtie blocks?
I take pictures when I lay out the blocks. I can spot two same-coloured blocks too close together better in the photo than when I look at the design floor. And like you, I keep the last photo close by when I sew the blocks together. I'm in love with the blue/aqua bowtie that looks like a circle, in the middle of the second row. Awesome print! I like how you set the values in your 16-patch block. Enjoy! ;^)

Its always fun when you get to assemble the block collections. I rather like the sixteen across blocks, may have to borrow that idea.

I have to use photos and print them out to sit on my cutting table. And still I sew them together wrong. I did that countless times the other day on my current squirrel! When you sew the 16-patches as leaders/enders, do you lay them out first? Or do you just pull out scraps as you go?
Gorgeous projects, and great idea to have the photo handy. I'm intrigued by the 16 across block. Blocks with the color going across the diagonal always get me. Plus I have more dark scraps than light, which would work out! Oh dear, I think I've talked myself into another quilt!
The split nine patch brings back fond memories. Two of the very first quilts I made were for my children's twin beds back when they were around 3 and 7 years old. They are 39 and 43 today. :) Wish I had your skill back then. The layout is stunning.

Way to make it work to have a hand stitching project going simultaneously with a machine stitching project. They will both work up beautifully. 🎶🎵 Who's afraid of the big bad wolf, the big bad wolf, the big bad wolf? 🎵🎵🎶 hahaha
Just wondering -- on you beautiful split 9 patch, did you mean to have a light colored block in the top row of the orange block on the upper right?

Your RSC quilts are always some of my favorites. The 16 patches are going to be fun to see come together.
I've done the split 9's before. It was so much fun that I've been wanting to make another one.
