This month's Table Scraps Challenge over at The Joyful Quilter included using dark neutral scraps and making something "mini." Here's where my scrappy journey took me...
Into the jar where I keep the selvage scraps!
I cut some favorites into 6 inch strips and sewed them, qayg style, to a piece of batting.
I stitched this panel to a backing made out of my favorite (dark neutral? maybe?) chrysanthemum print, leaving a few inches open on one side.
After filling it up with crushed walnut shells and stitching the opening closed, I ended up with a pretty neat pincushion.
This measures 9x5, so not a mini in the pincushion world,
but smaller than most things I make!
It fits right under the extension table of my sewing machine.
But then - I wasn't quite done with the dark neutral mini idea, so I cut some squares of the chrysanthemum print and some other scraps that went with it (how about that chocolate brown Grunge?), and hand-pieced a little mug rug mat.
Some hand quilting in a cross-hatch with ecru perle cotton #12 and a self binding from the brown backing fabric finished it off.
This measures 6 x 8.
Love these "just for fun" projects - playing with scraps is the best! Sharing at my favorite scrappy link-ups this weekend:
Awesome! Two! Two! Two for the price of one! Hahaha! Love the pincushion especially since it has the perfect place to sit. Happy day after Thanksgiving. Burp!
LOL!! I think you should get a prize for making the chunkiest pincushion out of the skinniest scrappy strips, Diann. Not one, but TWO super cute Dark NEUTRAL projects for the TABLE SCRAPS Challenge!
I like the spot to put the pin cushion - I won a pin cushion like that once some years back but it a mini.
I enjoyed reading the Old Rhyme in your last post, Diann. I hope you and Mike enjoyed your day.
Two cute and perfectly sewn little projects here! You have pretty scraps.
Nice small projects, finishes in a flash are fun!
Both are so very cute.
What fun! Love the pincushion made from selvages.
your pincushion and table mat are very cute. last summer, I made myself on the the skinny pincushion to have by my machine, too!
Oh I just know you had fun sewing up these cuties, great idea for the pincushion!
Two perfect little projects! I make a few half-hearted attempts to save my selvage from time to time but never follow through. I love that extension table, so spacious.
Terrific little projects!
Glad you were able to use up some selvages. Quilt as you go is the perfect plan for that collection.
Just for fun projects are so satisfying and fun. Both of yours finished up so nicely!
A very cute use of selvages. I save them too, but haven't used any lately so you've given me some inspiration.
What fun projects! I never think to keep the selvages.
Clever you, a made to measure selvedge Pincushion. After doing several selvedge projects, I've still got quite a pile to do something with.
Your little mug rug is adorable. You use pearl cotton 12 for hand quilting? I was thinking of doing a wallhanging that way -- someday. I like how the stitching looks on the back. Did you turn the backing to the front to bind it? It looks great.
Cute projects, and fun colors! Love the hand quilting!
I agree 100%, playing with scraps is the best. You did lovely little projects with yours. Kudos! ;^)
Agreeing will all the above comenters. Awesome! Love that mini mug rug and the cutest angel ever. That pincushion is a great idea! You can never have too any pincushions!! Have a wonderful week.
What fun projects! Congrats on your finishes.
