I'm hoping to get closer to having enough bow tie blocks to be able to figure out a layout and start sewing them together soon, so I always check that collection of blocks first. Here are the red ones I've already made -
And a few new ones added this week -
The first week of a new color, I always do a lot of cutting - 3.5" squares for bow ties, 2.5" squares for Scrappy Sprouts, and 1.5" x 2.5 inch rectangles for my Tiny Rails blocks.
Meanwhile, the 4th of July holiday this week put me in the mood for some Red, White, and Blue sewing! So I made a couple new coasters/mug rugs, which we use daily for setting drinks on where we sit to read and watch TV.
They go perfectly with the 4th of July flag table topper that I made last year!
And with this mug -
And one last bit of sewing - I turned this orphan string block (leftover from my String Star finish earlier this year) into a potholder.
I layered the string block with a scrap of regular batting and a piece of Insulbrite plus backing fabric to make it thick and heat resistant. Such a good way to use up orphan blocks! I know other quilty friends have done that and gave me the idea to do the same, so thank you for that!
Sharing at SoScrappy for ScrapHappy Saturday, and
at Quilting is more fun than Housework for Oh Scrap! on Sunday.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Very patriotic! Does it matter which side to put the layer of Insulbrite in potholders?
how big is your bow tie block going to be. I have made two of them over the years and one was queen and one a full size I think - It has been awhile so I'm not sure.
So glad you showed your flag table topper again, I loved that one. And perfect to have the coordinating mug rugs. But I thought you'd have all your red sewing done by now, hehehe.
You've been busy, and I love them all! That's great to have a festive decor for the 4th!
I love the idea of potholders for orphan blocks! They'd have to be gifts for other people, though, since we don't have an oven on the boat :)
It is so much fun to see those little piles of scraps turn into something pretty.
Great ideas for all those fun things. Have a good week and keep cool.
Love the red. I was surprised to find that I am short on red in my stash! I have some Christmas red though. Still loving your 4th of July flag table topper!!
Beautiful reds to play during July.
Beautiful table topper.
And now I have an idea to make a hot pad the same way!! To match my dinnerware and bakeware. Cute finishes!!
Love your red blocks, such a beautiful color!
What a fun day of sewing red, white and blue! Stray blocks are good for so many things, pot holders being one of them!!
Oh my goodness. I haven't even sewn June's blocks but at least they are cut out! Your reds are pretty. I also like your patriotic pot holder. Another idea I need to add to my list. Enjoy. mary
Your bowtie blocks are coming along nicely. And the patriotic pieces are nice too. The flag runner has always been a favorite of mine.
Thanks for linking up with Oh Scrap!
Well done!
I like all your red!! and your mug rugs - those are cool!
Love your bowtie blocks, this will be a wonderful rainbow scrappy quilt.
