Film Strip

A table scraps project for September!

Do you remember film strips in school?  As a teacher I used them once in awhile - especially if they went with a certain unit we were teaching.  I know that's really old technology now, but way back when, they were a helpful way to show a group of kids pictures of things we were studying.

When Joy challenged us to make something inspired by "television" I thought of happy blocks that featured the novelty beach fabric I bought on vacation in Oregon earlier this month.  This looks a little like a television, right?

Then I made four happy blocks in combinations of blues and browns, and sewed them together.  This changed my television into a "film strip" that is 7.5 x 28.5.

I like this color combination - very beach-like!

This was a quick and simple finish - I pieced a backing from squares of the novelty fabrics.  The binding came from the 5th fat quarter that I bought at the same time as the four that I used for the main project - it has shells and stones in a little darker brown.

And here is the finished front.

I made this for a specific spot - on top of my desk - long and narrow like this fits that space perfectly.  At the end of the desk sits our digital photo frame which shows our photos whenever we want to look at them.

I do have to admit that this table "scraps" project did not start with scraps, but it created some in the end.  I'm sure you'll see these scraps show up in other quilts!

A very fun finish. I remember watching film strips sometimes in school, but transparences and overhead projectors were the more common instruction aid.

How fun to use those pretty, beachy fabrics - love the way your runner turned out. It looks beautiful on your desk.
We have one of those digital frames somewhere, I need to find it!

What a fun desk-topper. And, yes, I remember film strips....fifty years ago at my first job. The small-town library had a Dukane projector that was a combo filmstrip viewer/cassette tape player. There was a collection of Newbery Medal books in that format. I can still hear the Dutch folksong in The Matchlock Gun.....

Love your interpretation! I remember flipping through films on the reader at the library for reports. Your little quilt is a calming one with those beach themes running through them.

Love those fabrics! What a lovely memory of the beach. Yes. I remember film strips. Technology in the classroom is really moving quickly. Different districts have different things, of course. Schools in the same district have the same equipment, but different ways to log in and different access to what works for them. It's great when it works! Most of the "young" teachers have come to the realization that a lot of the substitutes in their district are over age 55. That means that we weren't born with technology in our hands. Kids don't get to color or write as much as I think they should. Luckily there is usually a hard copy option for the younger classes.

Very cute little finish! I have a couple of "beachy" fabrics that I've been hoarding. Maybe it's time to actually use them in some project. LOL Oh yes - the filmstrips were a good technology. But I was very thankful when better technology came around. I really hated those temperamental film projectors too. LOL

OMG. What a great finish. I am stuck as to what to do. Guess I’ll have to put my thinking cap on. ;)
