I made a personal goal this year to use up as many smaller scraps as I can to make some placemats. So, I've been playing with the dark blue scraps this week. They're all different sizes, from long strips to squares, and I want to end up with a scrap slab that measures about 12.5 x 16.5. I started by pairing up like sizes and sewing them together.
Then, like a fabric puzzle, I combined pairs into groups, and just kept going until, little by little, they all fit together. The three chunks in the middle will sew together to just about get to the width I want. The two shorter ones needed a few more pieces sewn to them
I ended up with three scrappy strips that will be perfect for a placemat once they are sewn together - just two more seams needed.
Next I'm planning to do the same thing with my light blue scraps!
This kind of sewing works well for leaders and enders, so along the way I made some blocks for the current Many Hands and Many Hearts block drive.
I'm putting these in a big envelope along with the 16 Patch Star quilt top, and sending everything off this week!

Nice way to use up your scraps making placemats...the blues one looks really pretty...Hugs, Julierose
Such a fun way to use up the leftover bits and pieces. The donation blocks and quilt top will be very appreciated. Well done. Gail at the cozy quilter
I love your slab sewing and the blocks you sent away are really pretty - great use of your scraps! I'm waving a sad goodbye to your beautiful 16 Patch Star quilt.
The dark blue fabrics look great in a placemat. You did well with your smaller scraps. You've reminded me that I have some slab blocks that others made for me...hmmm...must dig those out.
Those dark blue scraps made into an awesome placemat. Cynthia will be happy for the blocks and top!
Such a great way to use up scraps! By the end of the year you'll have plenty of pretty placemats and (hopefully) empty scrap bins! I love your Many Hands Many Hearts blocks--so pretty. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

Great use of those blue scraps. I need to see if I have some blue scraps along and sew some string blocks.
Great idea for using up scraps, and those blues are looking good! I'm hoping to get some of those blocks done for Many Hands, too!
That's a good goal -- uses up smaller scraps, can fit in with RSC colors, and a useful product when finished to boot!
I should make up some place-mats I am using old woven mats that I've had for years
Oh Diann the blues that you are working with are scrumptious and a great way to use up the small scraps. Love the new leader / ender project. It looks like a fun block to work on. I hope you are having a great week . Hugs.
