I have to admit that I have not had a likeable week - my mom has transferred to a rehab facility for her broken hip and we're still just getting the lay of the land there. She has been confused and fearful about everything and that is hard to handle. I've had many moments of wondering what the future holds for her.
I did like getting back into my sewing room on Monday afternoon for a little while. I just needed to play with some fabric! I'm sure you know the feeling. I pulled out this pretty fat quarter and some Kona Grass Green scraps, and cut pieces for a zipper block.
Spring will come one of these days!
I've been enjoying visiting the blogs on the "Dust off a Quilt Book" blog hop. Cheree at The Morning Latte showed this book in one of her photos, and I realized I had that one in my bookshelf, so I went and pulled it out.
I'm not sure I actually purchased it - I think a friend gave it to me.
It is copyrighted 1998!
It turns out that it has the directions for many, many (well, 101 to be exact!) quilt blocks and then examples of a quilt made with the block. A lot of them are familiar to me, especially from seeing blocks that many quilters in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge have used over the years. I love this one below - it would be a lifetime achievement for me!
A sweet friend brought us a couple meals - yummy Bierocks and a pot of chili along with homemade focaccia bread. It is delicious! We don't get a lot of homemade bread at our house, so it is a big treat.
On TV we've been enjoying the spinoff from "Death in Paradise" called "Beyond Paradise." These shows are on the streaming service BritBox. We actually haven't watched much of "Death in Paradise," so have gone back and started watching it as well.
The Caribbean island setting is a lot of fun - even if there is a murder mystery to solve!
To end on a positive note, today (Wednesday) my mom was doing pretty well. When I got to the rehab place, my niece, Maya was there with her dog, Winston. That was enjoyable for Mom - she loves it when the dogs come to visit!
I felt encouraged today because we spoke with Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy and they have gotten Mom up to walk and move around a bit and that's a big deal at this point!
So maybe the week will end on a more positive note than it began on! Joining in with I Like Thursday, hosted by LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color!

I can relate to the feeling of needing to touch some fabric! What a trial for your mom and you. It is tough seeing your parent act in a foreign way to your knowledge! I'm glad she is doing better. As for the lifetime scrap quilt. . .you simply must start now! It is a beauty!
Sounds like your mom is improving. It takes time to recover from a broken hip. It’s great that she has already been up and moving around a bit. A bit of sewing will certainly help you to de-stress! Gail at the cozy quilter
Hang in there, things are getting better!! I hope you have a bit of sewing therapy this weekend.
Glad to hear Mom is getting up and around. It's understandable at her age that she's confused and fearful. I have made several quilts from that book.
I was going to email you today to see how things were going with your mom. I am glad she is up and moving, hopefully the rehab therapists will do wonders. Will keep you both in my thoughts, hugs.
So glad that each day shows some improvement for you mom. It looks like a lovely facility and I am happy to see that they allow puppy visits. I wish her improvements every day, and good outcomes from the physical/occupational therapy.
I might have that book too. But I have thinned out my book stash recently. Love the fabrics for your zipper block.
Have a good weekend. Spend a bit of time with your fabric.
I'm glad your mom is getting up now and the therapist have her walking - that is the first step so to say of recovery isn't it. She has to move that new hip. It must have been nice for her to have her granddaughter visit and sweet that she loves the dog too.
I must say I never heard of Bierocks and had to look it up!
Happy to hear that there seems to be some improvement for your Mother. I've been sharing her experience with my Mother since they're roughly the same age. My Mother would love a doggy visit too! She loves our Gracie but tolerates Polly the kitty. Haha! I was even happier to hear you managed a little fabric therapy for yourself. You know I totally understand! Hope you finish the week on a happy note.
Hoping that dog visit raised her spirits, and she is improving daily. I can see where some fabric therapy was needed this week. What pretty fabric you selected to play with.
I am sorry to learn of your Mom. That's tough and my heart goes out to you. I understand the need to play with fabric as it certainly soothes the soul!
My heart goes out to you and your Mom. I pray her confusion and fear go away and her physical recovery is quick. Also, praying for your peace and strength as you go through this experience.
Hi Diann! Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom and her broken hip. Thank heavens the surgery went well and is behind her now. Sue's Mom broke her hip January 4, 2022 and had a quack for her first surgeon. Six months later she had to have her surgery again - the first surgeon didn't do anything to repair it at all. I hope her rehab stay is temporary and maybe will be able to have someone come to the house? Here's some encouraging news - within six months, she was able to walk about her house with a cane! She's 87 and has some health issues. {{Hugs}} Oh, I know how stressful this is for both of you. It will be okay - we had our doubts for a good two months after the successful surgery. Keep encouraging her and walk with her - that's seems to be the best thing to get her strength back. It's amazing and a little scary how quickly it dissipates. Your Mom looks great in that last photo!! {{Hugs}} a bunch. ~smile~ Roseanne
I love that flowery print! Ooh - we had not heard of Beyond Paradise. May have to bookmark that. Hope your mom recovers quickly.
How wonderful that your mom is making improvements. The visits of the family and all of ya'lls encouragement I am sure lifts her spirits. Wishing her the very best in her recovery. So glad to hear that you was able to spend some down time in the quilt room.
Awww Diann, I teared up reading about your Mom's fear and your discouragement. I'm so glad for the therapy in the sewing room (such pretty fabrics!) and the canine therapy for your Mom, and for dedicated staff who are able to encourage folks to get up and move around! I have a special place in my heart for your Mom, she looks so sweet and frail, reminds me of my Mom.
I have enjoyed reading some of the dusty book posts. Yay for neighbors and comfort food!
It is so hard to watch our parents age. It sounds like your mother is in the right place for now. The therapy she'll get at the rehab center will help her so much and calm her fears. Glad you have quilting to help you work through your stress, happy stitching!
Fear of the unknown and strange places is definitely real, but it sounds like she is coming to good terms and making progress! She has people around her who are reassuring and helpful!
Love that gorgeous flower print you have for your zipper block! As I sit here watching a blizzard outside my window, I do have hopes for spring! It will come for both of us!
So sweet to have caring folks bring homemade treats! Your friend is a keeper!
Go for that lifetime scrap project! :)
I'm late reading this, but so encouraged to hear that you are hearing good updates on your mom. I hope she continues to recover and get her bearings. That will make you feel better, too. We've enjoyed Death in Paradise, and have been watching Beyond Paradise, too. Hearing the theme song for Death in Paradise made winter nights more bearable - ha!
Diann - glad to hear things are on a more positive note with your Mom. We lost my mother 2 years ago, and when we look back on it, falls and changes of location were very disorienting and difficult for her. I don't have that kind of stress in my life right now, but I do turn to my crafts for comfort! And bread is comforting too!
