Awhile back, when Deb at Happy to be Scrappy posted about starting a new hexagon project, I knew I needed to join in and sew along!
I watched the Missouri Star Quilt Company video and ordered the Daisy and Grace templates plus a charm pack to use for the hexagon centers.
You also cut a piece of batting using the smaller template.
This is a great way to use up scrap pieces of batting!
The charm pack I'm using is Prim by Lori Holt.
I'm doing all the stitching by hand, which includes the outside edges of each hexagon, sewn like binding, and then a quilting stitch 1/4 inside the hexagon using white DMC pearl cotton no. 12.
So far, I've made seven of these hexies, using a combination of Moda Bella Pearl and other solids for the backing plus various squares from the Prim charm pack.
I think the video shows these being sewn together with a ladder stitch from the back. I haven't gotten that far yet - I'll just keep making the hexies for awhile and see what kind of design looks good for them after I have more!

How intriguing!
ReplyDeleteWell, that was a fun "rabbit hole" to pursue! Wouldn't it make a fun RSC quilt for next year??? I, like you, would do it all by hand. Are you loving it? Would it become tedious for a larger project?
ReplyDeleteI have those templates also--I just haven't made a start on them as yet...thinking a nice table mat for my big round glass coffee table ...
ReplyDeleteYours are turning out beautifully...hugs, Julierose
What fun! I have a queen-size Grandmother's Flower Garden (without the binding on each hex) my mother made for me in the 70s that is assembled and quilted this way. Only she stitched the hexies on the machine, each like a little mini quilt. It is reversible -- calicoes on one side and solids on the other.
ReplyDeleteI love these! This is right up your alley with the hand stitching. I'm trying hard not to let this become a squirrel for me. Or at least when I am back in operation. ;)
ReplyDeleteI saw the tutorial for this a while back. I like what you have so far. How big does each hexie end up?
ReplyDeleteOh I just love how yours are coming along! Great charm pack you selected. I might switch and just do similar on the quilting of the hexagons.... your edges look so much better than mine! Happy stitching.
ReplyDeleteinteresting way to do hexagons - I saw one done something like this on Pinterest but there was a design embroidered on each hexie in the center - I think it was a flower maybe - it was very pretty
ReplyDeleteI love those fabrics. That is an interesting way to make the hexies.
ReplyDeleteThat Deb will get you in trouble EVERY time!! LOL!
ReplyDeleteGreat hexies! I have the templates, but haven't tried them yet.
ReplyDeleteSo fun! DO NOT tempt me!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your hand stitching!
Very cute. Aren't they fun?
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting twist on doing hexies. Your quilt stitches are looking fine. I assume you'll make this one on the smaller side.

I saw the tutorial and thought this would be fun to make, then forgot all about it until I read this post! I might have to order that!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite pretties to stitch is a QAYG hexies. Loving yours!
ReplyDeleteHow cute are they!! Eager to see this come to life.
ReplyDeleteA very fun project!
