For such a small project, this one feels like a huge accomplishment! It only measures 18.5 x 18.5, but there are a lot of bits of fabric and seams in this little quilt. Here is my version of "Full Spectrum," from Kelly Young's book Scrappy Improv Quilting!
Except for the background fabric (a fat quarter of white with pale blue dots),
every bit of this quilt is a scrap!
I enjoy making crumb blocks - they're a great way to get more out of the little odd-shaped scraps - and I'm always looking for ways to use them. This project started with a rainbow of crumbs sewn together in squares or rectangles according to the pattern.
Scrappy triangles in a square, stitch and flip corners, and smaller squares are cut of the crumb blocks to create this design!
Even the backing and binding are scraps from other quilts! I decided to stick with the blue theme that started with the background choice.
For the quilting, I followed the design to make a star,
and added some orange peel shapes in the center.
It was fun taking Full Spectrum out in the yard for a photo shoot! Under the apple tree:
And with the exploding petunias!
But it's going to live here, above the fireplace mantel in my sewing room. (Yes, those are longhorns! Long story...lol!)
I enjoyed everything about making this mini quilt!
Now moving on to my purple blocks for July!

ReplyDeleteGorgeous finish Diann. Great and beautiful use of small pieces and bits.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun little quilt! Great idea for your crumbs.
ReplyDeleteWhat a bright and cheerful finish, and it looks great hanging above your fireplace. Saving crumbs always seems like a great idea when I see projects like this!
ReplyDeleteYour mini quilt is so cute!! Love how it looks hanging above the mantel too. Minis are always so satisfying because they are relatively quick.
ReplyDeleteWow! I love the rainbow star quilt! Beautiful use of color and crumbs! And your outdoor photos are delightful.
ReplyDeleteYour little mini really turned out nice! I love the mix of colors, and it looks right at home on your wall. Of course, now I need to know the long story of the longhorns - haha!
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful little finish!
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty addition to your sewing room. I like the corners too, another dash of colour in your little quilt.
ReplyDeleteGreat interpretation of Kelly's concept. I really need to try my hand at crumbs ...
ReplyDeleteIt's the perfect spot to hang this bright cutie-congrats on the finish. And your petunia's are looking nice and full. I pinched off the tops of mine a few weeks ago and now they are filling in nicely. I always have a hard time doing that after getting them with blooms on, but it does work. I did that with my salvia's and now they are so much fuller and starting to bloom again.
ReplyDeleteI love that! Gorgeous use of those little bits and orts!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun finish! I love how you incorporated your crumbs into the blocks!
ReplyDeleteGosh what a pretty mini! I'm trying really hard not to think about how good it looks (squirrel!) LOL! The fact you enjoyed everything about making it says it all.
ReplyDeleteFabulous little scrappy finish!! Congratulations, Diann.
ReplyDeleteSo good, Diann!!! Gorgeous mantel display, too!!!
