Quite a bit of my sewing time this week has been devoted to prepping my hand-pieced scrappy Trip Around the World quilt for hand quilting. It's not the most exciting part of quilt construction, but it's a necessary one!
Pressing and de-threading the back came first. Lots of seams in this quilt!
The backing is yardage that I found at Joann's earlier in the week, so it needed to be pieced.
I decided to pin baste the layers, so I cleared off my sewing machine table, and used that nice big space to do the basting.
This quilt really has a lot of favorite scraps in it!
This might be my new favorite backing fabric for rainbow quilts!
I'll be quilting this with DMC white Perle Cotton #12, starting with all the white diagonals, and then going through the rainbow colors. This will be my slow stitching project for a lo-o-o-ng time!
Sharing at my favorite weekend linky parties:
Your Trip Around the World quilt is beautiful, Diann. I really love the layout and your fabrics are amazing. Oh yes! That backing is the bomb!!!! Love it. This is going to be a fun Slow Stitching project to work on . Looking forward to seeing your progress. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteJust such a beautiful hand sewn piece!! This should give you such pleasure to visit your favorite fabrics while quilting--
ReplyDeleteHugs, Julierose
Oh yes, it is not the fun part but it is very necessary. Are you using some kind of frame while quilting it? Happy stitching, Diann.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job and what a fun project to be slow stitching this winter.
ReplyDeleteI commend anyone that does hand quilting! Basting was always a pain back when I used to quilt on my domestic, which was so little I hardly mention I did it.
ReplyDeleteit looks wonderful - I'm so glad I don't need to baste with the 3 roller - I don't care for basting
ReplyDeleteYour backing is the perfect choice for such a cute scrappy quilt. Love those TATW blocks. I haven't done one of those in quite awhile, so now I'm considering those blocks for a new RSC set.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun collection of colors! The diagonal quilting rows will be perfect for slow stitching. Congratulations on a great project getting to the finish line.
ReplyDeleteI see a trip to JoAnn Fabrics in my future, as I'm not sure that I can resist that sweet spotty fabric. Thanks for that, Diann, and for sharing your lovely new RSC top!!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is so pretty, happy stitching!
ReplyDeletePressing! What a chore! But we can't have a beautiful quilt without it. I love this quilt. Enjoy the hand quilting. ;^)
ReplyDeleteYour hand piecing is perfect! I would never had guessed that it was hand pieced!
ReplyDeleteDo you pin baste without clamping, or taping, your background taut to the table?
ReplyDeleteLove the backing fabric choice for your RSC project! Perfect! :)
Very pretty quilt, lots to look at amongst those favourite scraps. Enjoy your hand quilting.
ReplyDeleteIt's well worth the effort!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on moving a top to a finish. Should make for many hours of enjoyment.
ReplyDeleteYou are getting a lot of pleasure from this quilt, hand piecing all the blocks now hand quilting! The backing fabric is delightful, as you say, just right for Rainbow quilts. Well done indeed.
ReplyDeleteWow, the back of my quilts never look like that. Amazing! That backing fabric is so fun!
ReplyDeleteYour scrappy trip looks pretty, and you're off to a great start with your hand stitching! I'm so impressed that you de-thread your flimsy. You make me feel like a slob, Diann - lol JK!
ReplyDeleteThis should keep you busy for the winter! That backing is perfect!
ReplyDeleteHand quilting is such a relaxing thing to do (after you get it all set up!) How did you get all the threads off the back? I have a quilt that has many pieces and the fabric has just shredded (very annoying). Anyway, I thought about taking a lint roller to it. It's a king-sized quilt.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is so lovely! I love the colors and oh my! Your hand quilting is beautifully done! Don't you just love hand stitching?
ReplyDeleteWoo hoo! What a wonderful top, and those adorable waving penguins are the best. Kudos for doing hand quilting. I hope you enjoy every minute.
ReplyDeleteThe back of your quilt top is just as beautiful as the top! I wish everyone was as careful as you are about the final steps of "pressing and dethreading." ;-). Love your backing fabric, too. I predict you'll enjoy every minute of hand quilting this sweet, cheerful quilt!
ReplyDeleteI never thought to use the massive amounts of DMC perle cotton that I have inherited for quilting. Thank you so much for the idea. I love that backing fabric for that pretty quilt. Enjoy you stitching!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt top is beautiful! Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful quilt, and am sure hand quilting this will be very rewarding.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great layout for your RSC quilt and I agree the backing fabric is perfect. It looks like it might be from the hungry caterpillar range? I look forward to watching your quilting progress with this one!
ReplyDeleteYour winter evenings are now spoken for Diann :)
ReplyDeleteIt is going to be lovely when you get it all finished. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
So exciting your Scrappy Rainbow quilt is up to the quilting stage. Those diagonal lines through each square will look fabulous. And...yes the backing fabric is perfect for a rainbow quilt....such a fun fabric.
ReplyDeleteLoved seeing your wee penguins in your quilt!! What a beautiful top this is!!! Enjoy the quilting! Have a great day Diann!
