I Like Thursday #247

Happy Thursday, friends!  Hope you're having a good week.  My mom is improving every day, so this week has been much better than last.  Thank you so much for all your good wishes - they were so appreciated!

I like August!  (Especially ever since I retired from teaching, lol!)  I like that I am able to eat things I've grown in my garden, like this cucumber that surprised me with its size the other day.

Today I noticed that the apples are getting larger.  We hope to have some to eat in September!

I bet you're noticing that we have a new fence in our backyard, too.
We just had it replaced about two weeks ago.  We live in a 40+ year old neighborhood, and everyone has a fence around their yard.  We could have lived without one since we no longer have a dog, but the neighbors need it.  Mike calls this one the Great Wall of China because it feels so big!

Aqua is the color of August for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, and I've loved getting out my aqua scraps to play with this week.  The Full Stop block this month is a question mark, and I just had to make one.  It might be my favorite block for this project yet!  I'd better make some more.

I enjoyed this book this week, The Silent Sister, by Diane Chamberlain.  It was a pretty good page-turner, and kept me interested.  I'm planning to read more by this author!

I'm joining in with LeeAnna and friends at Not Afraid of Color for I like Thursday.  Be sure to check out all the other Thursday posts for lots to like!

  1. The weather here has not been kind to our garden, even with watering it regularly. There are three itsy bitsy cucumbers on the vine now, but it is late for just getting a start. I have only gotten 2 zuchinni and nothing more starting. The peas all got ate off at ground level by some critter:( And the lettuce did horrible. So I am glad you are getting something this year!

  2. it is odd how some have luck with gardens all the time and have tons of produce and the rest of us have the odd cucumber here and there - but yet here the tomatoes seem to produce all the time - but the squashes and cucumbers take up a lot of room I rarely have luck with. Your apple tree looks wonderful - mine seems to only produce wormy horrid looking apples that are rotting and falling to ground and I can't bother to pick any off of the tree as they are not ripe yet but full of worms already - and they looked so pretty at the beginning.

  3. I just love getting fresh vegetables out of the garden at this time of the year, too! Especially tomatoes that are still warm from the sun! Your aqua block is a cute color!!!

  4. Fresh cukes and apples - life is good! Glad to hear your mom is making good progress, I'm sure that relieves the stress for all of you a bit. Fun to see your quilting progress too. That fence will make for good photo shoots!

  5. I just enjoyed a lovely catch up of your posts, Diann. Though I am sorry about your Mom's fall...so dangerous for us older folks. Hope she does not have any mats about-they can be a problem.
Meanwhile, lots of pretty quilting to be seen; oh and also enjoyed your embroidery very much. Loved Mike's photo of the big bumblebee. I love to watch the big ones!

  6. Like Wendy, I bet the fence will make a good photo backdrop. But why did you need to put up the fence if it is the neighbor who needs it? Glad you Mom is doing better and you're finding more time for your projects.

  7. I sort of wanted to grow some cucumbers or squash, but don’t really have the space! Luckily I have a couple of good friends and neighbors who have an abundance and are willing to share! So glad your mom is improving every day! Now I really want to make a ? block!

  8. Love your question mark block, The turquoise grunge fabric is so pretty! If I was your neighbor, I'd be happy that you put up a wooden fence. I don't care for the plastic fences because of their glare. I'll have to check out that book!

  9. That's quite a cuke! I found one like that, hiding in my tomatoes. Great Wall of China... LOL!

  10. Your cuke is awesome. I have had a few, huge ones. But they are just grown to help the kids feed the pigs anyway. I got a few zucchini but again with the crazy weather, hot, then pouring rain they were missed until gigantic too so they were all prepped for zucchini bread later. Glad your mom is doing better. Great wall of China? I bet it perhaps feels that way. Love the question mark and the fabrics you chose.

  11. Glad your Mom is doing better! I've been wondering how she was doing. Your cucumber is fantastic, do you make pickles or anything with them? Your fence is pretty! Have a good weekend!

  12. Those cukes will certainly surprise you. I swear mine used to grow overnight and were usually too big by the time I found them. I'm envious of your apple tree. I've added that book to my wishlist after I read the first chapter on Amazon!

  13. It is that time of year. Back to school sales and things ripening in the garden. Seems you've got the best of both of those things this week.
