Getting started with dark blue...

We went for a hike up in Rocky Mountain National Park the other day under this beautiful blue sky.

That really got me in the mood for sewing with some blue, specifically dark blue, the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for July.   Since I made some wonky trees for the Rainbow Jungle in light blue earlier this year, I pulled them out first to see what fabrics I had already used.

This group has a dark blue and a dark gray, but it could still use some more dark blues.

This is the fun part - hunting around for just the right pieces to make these trees from!  How about these?

I usually try to find about an 8 inch square, and that first batik isn't quite wide enough,
but maybe I can make it work.

Look what else I found!

Perfect to use for blocks this month!

So, I stitched up a few trees -

I like this combination!

I'm always looking for fabric pairs that have a good contrast.  I like these trees, too!

Here's the blue Rainbow Jungle now.

Four more dark blue trees needed!

Meanwhile, I kept playing with the smaller dark blue batik scraps, sewing up pairs, adding a strip here and there, ending up with this slab.

I added in some sunny yellow, and now I'm auditioning some strips
to go around the outside.  Just something fun to play with!

Wishing you all a fun and safe July 4th!

  1. Fun trees. I really like the pops of yellow in combo with the blue. I made some of those trees a couple of Christmases ago and they are a bit addictive .

  5. You are off to fabulous start with your dark blue blocks.
The original pattern requires 8" squares although it is possible to make similar blocks with smaller scraps using freezer paper templates. Guess I am not the only one aching for sunshine and yellow :-)

  10. Hi there Diann, catching up on your posts here this morning. You have so many lovely batiks in blues...batiks are gorgeous, aren't they and how clever that they are basically reversible.
You have a great project here with the ongoing trees. All so cute.
What a great place for hiking. Take care now the two of you.

  15. Happy 4th to you and Mike. Good start on your dark blues. It's too hot here for me to sew, 90's all week which is very unusual here. I'm just going to sit in front of the fan and vegetate.

  18. Your trees are so pretty - especially knowing you were inspired by nature! I like how you let us into your planning and thought process. I learned from you today. That last block of Playing with Blue is awesome, but yellow is my favorite color so I may be a bit partial! :)
