Honoring Paula Budinger
Big thanks go to Janice at Color, Creating, and Quilting, and Kate at Smiles from Kate, for organizing this blog hop to honor Paula. You can read more about Paula here.
I met Paula, as many of you also did, when I first joined in with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and we commented on each other's posts. Sometime in 2019, we discovered that we had both purchased the same new sewing machine, a Pfaff Ambition 610, and were working hard to figure out all its great features. I especially admired Paula's generosity as a quilter, and am so pleased to honor her life by sharing some donation projects of my own.
There are so many ways that quilters can donate fabric, thread, and time to help others. If you're a slow quilter like me, it's great to find ways to give back that may not involve a completed quilt! Block drives, like the ones that Kat of Kat and Cat quilts organizes for her charity, Covered in Love are a great way to get started. I've really enjoyed sending blocks to Kat several times a year for the last few years. It's even more fun when she shares the finished quilts on her blog, and you can say, "There's my block!"
These interesting string blocks were sent in
for the January/February 2020 block drive.
Carole, of From My Carolina Home, collects small quilted items for Safelight, a domestic violence shelter. I've been making sets of quilted pouches and sending them to her once a year. These pouches go into tote bags full of helpful items that support people who've had to leave their homes without taking anything with them.
This year's set -
Recently, Carole came up with another challenge that I had to join in with, too! Make a placemat that shows how you're spending your time during the Covid 19 Stay-at-Home period, and donate it to Meals on Wheels.
Here's my contribution for the challenge:
Can you tell what I've been doing? Waiting for Spring to arrive, enjoying the birds in my yard, doing lots of embroidery, and sewing scrappy 4 patches!
Finally, this is a little quilt I'll be sending off to Jack's Basket, a favorite organization of Paula's, later this month. The mission of Jack's Basket is to celebrate babies with Down Syndrome, and small quilts are perfect for the baskets they give to families.
Bright and colorful! Hopefully, perfect to celebrate a newborn baby!

Thanks for visiting my stop on the blog hop today! Be sure to check out the other quilters who are joining in to celebrate Paula's life, too. And if you leave a comment, you'll be entered into a drawing for some great prizes, which are listed at the very bottom!

I see that you and I follow many of the same blogs and contribute to the charities they support. Always good to be sewing for others.
ReplyDeleteFun to see your placemat for Meals on Wheels. You are always so giving. You have to know
ReplyDeleteJack’s Basket donation is a favorite of mine. What’s not to like about crumb blocks and gray grunge! Lol
Placemats for meals on wheels, what a great idea! Yours is sweet and sure to brighten someone's day:)
ReplyDeletegreat looking quilts
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder, Diann, that there are many opportunities to donate items other than whole quilts--and so many ways to bring comfort and delight to others. Thanks for adding this perspective to the celebration of Paula's life.
ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing out that there are SEW many ways to contribute, Diann!! All of your items will be used and loved. That donation quilt for Jack's Basket is SEW darling!
ReplyDeleteHi Diann! What a wonderful post honoring a wonderful lady. I didn't know Paula but I know she would be so proud to have a hop in her honor. I love all the donation projects you've shared. It seems like quilters as a whole are such a giving bunch. I know there's a baby and its family who will adore this baby quilt so much. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteI am sure enjoying this hop. Thank you for sharing your quilts and Paula's story.
ReplyDeleteDiann, I'm so happy to see these projects featured and glad you joined the hop. You do so much sewing for others and you just don't ever toot your own horn! Beautiful work and what a lovely way to honor Paula. I've enjoyed reading how so many of these bloggers knew her.
ReplyDeleteYou've done some very nice charity projects, Diann! I especially love that little quilt with its bright, happy colors!
ReplyDeleteSo many lovely charity projects. You may be a slow sewer, but you more than make up with it looking at what you give.
ReplyDeleteLove that January block. Baby quilt is really cute. What a great charity.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love the Jack's Basket quilt! So nice and cheerful. In an online group I belong to, one woman who's husband is hospitalized thanked all the anonymous people who had made and donated comfort items for the patients. She said they brought just a bit of a smile, knowing that so many cared. Your smaller quilty projects reminded me of that, and it is so true. Sure to be appreciated, even if we never see it.
ReplyDeleteGreat job honoring Paula in your own ways! What a fun baby quilt for Jack's Basket!
ReplyDeleteBright and colorful is perfect. Smiles all around.
ReplyDeleteDann you have made a truly inspiring array of projects for so many charities. Beautiful
ReplyDeleteAs usual you are busy as a bee - churning out several projects simultaneously. Love the rainbow scrappy quilt you made for Jack's Basket. It is such a darling quilt and with its rainbow scrappy goodness it is a perfect nod to Paula's style.
ReplyDeleteSo many sweet little projects! My favorite is the placemat for Meals on Wheels. Someone is going to enjoy that every day on their table :)
ReplyDeleteI love all the ideas for small projects that you can do with a little time and a little fabric to connect directly with organizations. So helpful to have some practical and doable ideas. Love your colours too. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteCute projects!
ReplyDeleteI love your little baby quilt, such a happy quilt. What a nice way to honor Paula.
ReplyDeleteEven if you are a "slow quilter", you have donated some fantastic items. Your baby quilt for Jack's Basket certainly is very cheery and I'm sure it will be cherished.
ReplyDeleteI like your bright scrappy quilt for babies - it will be well loved!
ReplyDeleteWonderful things you've been doing, and a lot of my favorite places, too. I so like your happy placemat. That is going to make someone's meals very special and cheery! Jack's Basket will love the scrappy puzzle-looking quilt. I love that it isn't all pastels, which are the last color cones to develop in the eyes, but has some lovely dark ones, too!
ReplyDeleteLove your crumb quilt, so bright and happy. It is nice to spread so much love to so many charities doing good works. I am following you via bloglovin'.
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying seeing everyone's quilts. What a wonderful way to honor Paula. Right now I am making a skinny twin size quilt for the Youth Detention Center which is this year's guild project to add some color to their sterile space. Nancy A: SewingGranda@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteYou have made some gorgeous projects there Diann! I especially love the lovely bright one you made for Jacks basket!
ReplyDeleteNice placemats too.
What a kind tribute to Paula B.

Love your placemat! I did not hear of that program for meals on wheels. What a great idea. I sometimes deliver meals to people in our church. I may make a few place mats to deliver with them. What a happy idea that shows love a little bit longer.
ReplyDeleteYou have truly honored Paula's memory with so many donations, big & small. Love the ideas of donating blocks ... I sent a couple of blocks to Joyful Quilter for the victims of the Australian fires. Love donating blocks because I too am a very slow quilter.
ReplyDeleteSo many places to donate quilts! Our guild supports the local womens' Safe House by making quilts for everyone who stays there when they need to leave a bad home situation.
ReplyDeleteI fell behind on my regular blog reading while following the hop honoring Paula. I skipped the links for the quilters I follow and now I'm catching up. I, too, like being able to send blocks to Kat for Covered in Love and being able to do small quilts for Jack's Basket means I actually finish things and get them sent. Three cheers for you for donating to so many wonderful causes.
ReplyDeletePat
I love that colourful baby quilt! I think babies like bright colours more than pastels. Thank you for inviting us to visit!
ReplyDeleteHi Diann! You are a kindred spirit with Paula for sure! Loved seeing all of the projects you have been working on and donating! Thanks so much for participating in the blog hop. That post was a fun read! (as usual) :)
ReplyDeleteLoved your quilt! Our guild does placemats for meals on wheels too!
ReplyDeleteDonations come in many forms, not just quilts. I love the placemat going to meals on wheels, a very worthy cause!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your insight that it's great to be able to contribute something other than an entire quilt sometimes. Isn't it lovely to be a quilter and have so many ways to give back? This is a wonderful blog hop that is a good nudge to each of us to consider the kind of legacy we are leaving behind--are we living the kind of life that will cause others, upon our passing, to be motivated to perform acts of charity?
ReplyDeleteWhat a bright and cheery quilt you have made for Jack's Baskets. I'm sure a family will really love receiving it.
ReplyDeleteLove all of these great projects! It's so nice to see so many pretty projects going to help people in honor of Paula.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful projects, Diann! Thanks for being part of Hands2Help 2020!
