Laying these pieces out actually takes a little more thinking than I realized it would at first, because I want them to be balanced color-wise throughout the quilt, and I don't want them right next to a star with that same fabric.
To make that easy to achieve, I have started laying the stars out on flannel sheet on the floor so I can look at two rows at a time and then move the little squares around as needed. So far so good! And I think I'm ready to sew some blocks together and add the next row.
But that brings up another question! Should the 2 inch cornerstones go out into the sashing (or border) that I'm planning to have go around all of the stars? That would look like this below - and looking at this photo again, I'm thinking the squares would land in each of the corners as well - top left and right, and bottom left and right.
I think I know my answer to that question, but I'm curious to know yours!
Happy ScrapHappy Saturday, friends!
That is a tough question. Lazy me would just sew on a white strip :)
ReplyDeleteI do like adding it to the border. It's looking great.
ReplyDeleteI like the squares in the sashing.
ReplyDeleteI like the colored squares in the border too!
ReplyDeleteI really like the way that the extra square draws the lines out into the border. What a fun collection of blocks.
ReplyDeleteit's definitely more work, you're right, but so worth it in the end. I did that to several of my rainbow quilts, and it adds just that extra touch!
ReplyDeleteAll these decisions! I really like the pattern created when blocks come together. I guess I usually like engaging the borders. Even more with another square maybe. I never know til I make the extra blocks and put them on the wall, and think about it, and put the whole thing away for two years, and get it back out, and just pick one option and finally finish whether or not it's the right way.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt will be lovely... no matter WHAT you decide to do with the borders!! I would lay it all before making a decision, as it may or may not end up the way you expect.
ReplyDeleteIt's super duper Diane, I love it. That aqua square just screams at me-so pretty!!!
ReplyDeleteThese starts look so fresh and pretty. Great choice!
ReplyDeleteIf you add a border you really need to put a block on the four corners, I don't know about the rest. It's really lovely.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd have it so the nine patch finishes in the border for the sides and the corners... but that would be an extra little border.
ReplyDeleteThis is looking awesome so far! I would do the squares in the corners, then add another border!
ReplyDeleteI would leave the cornerstones out of the final border that goes around all the stars. And then the next time I look at it I will tell you they should go there!
ReplyDeleteIt will be a stunning quilt no matter the decision.
These look awesome!
ReplyDeleteFantastic quilt you're making here. Love the layout so far. I want to make such a quilt and I'll tell you how my Scrap Jar Star will be done. The cornerstone added in the sashing produce a 9-Patch block. I will make the 9-Patch out onto the border too. Like that people look at the star and wonder how I managed to make these blocks and the 9-Patch in the sashing. Only true quilters will pick-up on the trick right away. Hehehehe! It is a glorious quilt. Good luck with the decision. ;^)
ReplyDeleteIt's fabulous!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'd put the squares all the way out into the border. But it's your quilt, and you just do what makes you happy! Whichever you choose it's going to look great anyway!
The little squares in the border adds a finishing touch. It is going to be a pretty quilt either way.
ReplyDeleteFWIW - I put the extra row of cornerstones on my last Scrap Jar Star quilt - I like the effect AND it makes the outer edge less vulnerable to stretching. I ran out of background fabric on my first SJS and couldn't do that last border; that outer border then had more little pieces and needed stay-stitching to keep it from stretching.
ReplyDeleteLove how your stars are coming together. It's going to be a bright and fun quilt.
