Thinking ahead...

Cathy at Crazy by Design and Kat at Scrapbox Quilts are hosting a QAL in the new year that involves making a whole neighborhood of houses, and I'm planning to join in.

Over the years, I've made several quilts that involved houses, and here are a few.  This first one is from the mmmquilts QAL in 2023 - Rainbow Neighborhood - and it's really a favorite quilt of mine.

The houses in this wall-hanging were all made improv style.

And this mini quilt below was from another QAL back in 2017.

And, finally,  these little house blocks are from Twiggy and Opal.  I don't think her blog is active anymore, but you can still see the patterns in her Etsy shop.  These are paper-pieced.  I enjoyed making this little piece in 2020 when Covid was going on and we couldn't get together with our kids at Christmas.

I decided to test an 8 inch size block of one of these to see if a paper-pieced block would work for the QAL in the new year.  Since I purchased the pattern back in 2020, I have it downloaded and can print out the pages whenever I need them.

I haven't done any foundation paper piecing in quite awhile, so I am a bit rusty.  I only needed to rip out the first two seams, lol!  But I eventually got the hang of it - here is the center heart section for the house.  I fussy cut some words out of my Christmas text fabric since it was out for some previous projects.

Fussy cutting for this kind of piecing can be tricky, but I managed it for these particular words.  Maybe I can use up a few scraps in these blocks.  We'll see!

On to the next sections!  I'll share my result later in the month.

Linking up with SoScrappy for ScrapHappy Saturday.

  4. You have some very fun house quilts. That kind of project is on my to do list, scrappy houses. I'll get there at some point. Enjoy the paper piecing, it does take a bit to get back into the groove if you've not done any for a bit.

  5. That is a sweet bit of paper piecing, especially involving fussy cutting. Is there going to be a pattern for the QAL, or is it a "do your own" pattern? I went to both blogs and clicked on links but could find no information on either other than an announcement. It looks like Cathy has had some tragedy in her family, so that's understandable. :(

  6. I love paper piecing, I just dont seem to get to it much anymore. Look at you getting a head start on your houses neighborhood. It seems we have a bit of a change in plans on the Quilters Neighborhood project. Yes, I am still doing it. Cathy of Crazy By Design needed to drop out as a leader due to upcoming surgical procedures-yes, more than one!. She was going to do the link up parties. I am following my housing project in line with SoScrappys monthly RSC. I want my elements very scrappy with strings and crumbs. There are several layouts that interest me. If I know the approx size to use, I can get started..... so anxious to get the holidays behind me.

I couldn't get the gist of creating linky parties, so we will have to work around that. I will still link posts to the Quilters Cove button for easy finding. If you have ideas or suggestions for this quilt along, my ears are OPEN and WILLING. :D

  7. Thank you for sharing your past houses in quilts...really neat to see and I remember a couple of them. Paper piecing is an interesting process isn't it but so effective with the results. I will love seeing this QAL as houses are one of my favourite quilt themes. Great fussy cutting here too!

  11. What a fun idea! I gifted away the house quilt I made years ago with the RSC (seems Emily was not happy with that one leaving), so maybe it is a push to make another one next year!
