I Like Thursday #329

Happy Thursday, friends!  I'm joining in, as always, with LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color for I Like Thursday.  Hope you're having a great week!

Did you know that the dates of the last 10 days of March form palindromes?  I didn't realize this until I saw this meme on Facebook.  Interesting!

In Colorado, it became legal to sell wine in the grocery stores as of March 1st.  We're starting to see items like this, which caught my eye the other day.   This made me smile, and I had to go back and take a picture!

Do you get into a book series, and have to read the next book as soon as you finish the one before?  That's where I'm at with the Ruth Galloway series, by Elly Griffith.  I know I've shared this series before.  I think I'm on my fourth one for the month of March!

This week I've been enjoying finishing up my Table Scraps projects for this month, and will share them in a post tomorrow.  For a quick sewing project yesterday, I stitched up one more set of cloth napkins in green.  I've made a lot of these since discovering this tutorial for them several years ago.  Two fat quarters make two napkins.

I made three sets of these last year - red (apples),
yellow (bananas), and purple (grapes).
We get a lot of use out of them!

Easter is coming up - are you hosting a big dinner at your house?  I did last last year, but no plans for that this year.  Even so, there is a meal that feels traditional to me for Easter and that is ham with cheesy potatoes.   I've used several recipes for the potato dish over the years, and recently have been making them in the crockpot.  This recipe intrigued me because it was just 5 ingredients.

Those look good, don't they?!

  1. Our older grandsons both got married on Palindrome dates. Sure makes the anniversary easier to remember!

  2. I was in a grocery store last night to get some coffee cream, and couldn't figure out at first why I saw a big bin of cranberry sauce and beside it a rack of Stove Top Stuffing... and then it hit me that some people (ike my aunt on the farm) do big Easter dinners like Thanksgiving and Christmas! Duh. Not I. Thank you for another book (series) recommendation! Great napkins - off to check the tutorial as I've just made single layer ones for myself and daughters.

  3. I've never really done much for Easter and some years barely celebrate it - when I was a kid it was ham. love your stars.

  5. Easter will be different here this year. This weekend instead of the actual Sunday! I want it to be easy! So just basics. And Birthday cake/ strawberries on angel food cake. I need to make a few more napkins, thanks for the link! I have it somewhere! That seems to be my problem. I note things while blog reading buy lose them ! Ugh! A notebook by my chair?

  6. We used to do big Easter dinners but not so much in the past decade or so. But ham and deviled eggs are almost always on the menu. I'm going to check out those potatoes - yum! LOL on that grocery bag! I had no idea wine in grocery stores was not legal in CO. It has been legal here for quite awhile. I think the wine aisle are pretty! I think the wine laws are all pretty silly. For instance, here you can only buy beer and wine on Sundays (starting at 10am!) but no liquor can be sold on Sunday. I mean, what difference does it make? :D

  8. Easter has always been a big day at our house but not this year. The kids and my mom will all be in different places but I'll still make our traditional ham and scalloped potatoes. It's also my husband's birthday weekend so I'll bake his favorite chocolate cake. I've never thought of wine being a fruit salad but it works!

  9. Easter used to be a big deal growing up and of course celebrated too with my girls but seems to be less and less each year. I will cook a turkey dinner soon just because I want one myself. Lovely block there and how clever to sew napkins. Always admire when something so useful is sewn. Wine's been sold in grocery stores for a number of years here. Cute sign.

  10. I had to laugh over wine being basically fruit salad! I'm also into the Ruth Galloway series. Each book is a great read. I'm getting started on the series. Those green napkins are great!

  11. Wine as fruit salad - ha! Peas fabric for a napkin - perfect! I agree, those cheese potatoes look good.

  12. The "wine is fruit salad" bag reminded me of a poster I saw in a thrift shop.

    Chocolate comes from cocoa
    which comes from a tree
    that makes it a plant
    therefore chocolate is a salad

I did read the first Ruth Galloway book on your recommendation, but haven't gotten any farther. Easter was always a big family dinner, usually ham, when I was growing up. You still can't buy wine in the grocery stores in NY, the liquor store lobby fights the legislation every time it is introduced.

  13. Aah your napkins are so cute, Diann . Love the fabric. Thank you so much for the link for Cheesy Potatoes. I like using the crockpot whenever possible. We have not finalized our Easter plans yet but I know there will be good food and Easter hunts involved. Have a great weekend.

  14. Thanks for the link for the fat quarter napkin project. Genius. How do they wash up for you? Do you feel like they wrinkle a lot or "shift" in the washer? Oh how I wish our grocery stores in Delaware sold wine! Loved that bag with the "salad" statement!

  16. I love the Elly Griffiths' books, but I know I've not read the most recent book. My Guy doesn't like ham, so I'm not sure what we are doing for Easter dinner, but cheesy potatoes sounds good. Have a great week.

  17. I read the first book in that series, and then forgot about it - I'll have to get the next one. Love those wonky stars as a backdrop to those green napkins!
