Some little finishes

Just popping in with a quick post to share some small hand - pieced quilted mats I've finished up recently.   In the last few years, I've learned how to hand-piece and have come to enjoy it so much that sometimes I just piece together a few patchwork squares because I need a handwork project!

Twelve 2.5 inch squares will make a small mat that's about 6 x 8 inches.  Some diagonal hand quilting and the backing folded over to make the binding edge, and voila!  This one is all greens for March.

I've made several of these in recent months, all kind of seasonal.  The larger one was started with some orphan 3 inch bowtie blocks, so I matched them with 3 inch squares and did the rest of the piecing by hand.

The pink one was made in February.  I have to show you the backing fabric!

Penguins on pink, of course!

These little mats are mug rug size, but here's what I've ended up using them for recently.  Just for fun!

  1. hand piecing is fun - some think it is excruciating and "takes so long" and that always surprises me that they don't see how stress free it is

  2. Your stitches are really beautiful Diann. I'm one of those that Karen is talking about - it's excruciating for me. My Granny would be shocked to hear me say that! Your minis are so cute. Haha you have your sweet angels sitting on your woofer. :D Now I'm wondering if my husband would let me cover ours with a mini!

  4. It's so fun to just tuck in a little bit of our quilting here and there about the house isn't it. It just makes our day better to see our projects!

  6. What a lovely idea, Diann! Sorry for calling you Wendy a moment ago — I got confused by her picture right above where I was typing my comment. I love how you’re using your little quilted mats.

  7. Oh how fun they all are! And what a great way to get a hand-quilting fix without the full commitment of a huge quilt! (def what I need!). Do you have a whole stash of penguin fabric btw? LOL

  9. We finished Shetland and enjoyed it. I like how Henshall is so quietly great at acting. Though I would have enjoyed seeing him smile a bit more!
I often do breakfast for supper and Tony loves it esp. if bacon is involved.
I love that you are finding such pleasure in slow stitching hand stitching. Wonderful stuff, Diann.

  11. Love that pink penguin fabric. You've really taken to the hand stitching. You must be pretty quick with the needle to get so much done with the hand piecing and the embroidery.

  12. Super cute little quilted mats, Diann! While hand piecing isn't my thing, I understand the zen-like appeal of it. Looking forward to your next finish!
