My week began with this fat quarter of happy Santas!
Remembering these quick quilt-as-you-go placemats that I made last December...
I cut some strips from my Christmas scraps and sewed up another placemat in the same style.
This time I used the Santa fabric for the binding.
This one has its own special place on our table in between the comfy chairs - the place where we have morning coffee, afternoon iced tea, and wine before dinner!
It measures about 13 x 17.
Perfect for the season!
But I didn't stop there! Have you been following the Virtual Cookie Exchange blog hop at Just Let Me Quilt this week? I have, and besides several cookie recipes that I have to try, I came across a tablerunner I absolutely *had* to make! (wink!) This pattern comes from Samelia's Mum and you can find it here: Red Braid Tablerunner. It needs 2.5 x 8.5 inch strips, so a perfect segue from the first QAYG project.
This design starts with a triangle cut from 1/2 of a 9.5 inch square. You also need 2.5 inch squares along with the strips, and you build the runner by adding strips to each side, one at a time.
Because you sew one strip at a time to alternating sides of the piece, this needs a leader/ender in between seams, so that was a good opportunity to add sashing and cornerstones to Easy Breezy blocks. (So I did work on one RSC project this week!)
And here's where I left off yesterday afternoon - all the strips are together and the end is finished off with two quarter square triangles, cut from that original 9.5 inch square.
Next step is to trim off the edges to make a rectangle,
then quilt and bind! I hope to have this finished for our
Christmas Day dinner.

Quilting is more fun than Housework for Oh Scrap!
I have done several similar braid runners with QAYG -- easy and done! Well, except the binding. In fact, I have one that needs binding right now!
ReplyDeleteI did one of these on my longarm a few years ago. Kinda fun to do something a little different:)
ReplyDeleteI like the braid table runner I did a braid border like that on a queen quilt for my sister years ago
ReplyDeleteHooray for Table Scraps!! Looking forward to seeing your Challenge entry in the Link Party later this month. I used Anorina's pattern when red was the color for the RSC. It's a process, but offers a good result. Happy finishing, Diann!
ReplyDeleteThat will be a perfect little finish just in time for Christmas! Lovely choice of fabrics, too!
ReplyDeleteNice job on both the table mat AND the braid runner! Good to see you're still scrapping along too with the Easy Breezy blocks.
ReplyDeleteI took a class years ago that made a similar runner, but you used the full square as the center, then worked the strips out in both directions. The class project was done bargello style and the binding was made by turning the backing to the front and hand stitching it down.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you will have yours done in no time.

beautiful table toppers
ReplyDeleteOoh - great Christmas fabrics! Great place mats! That will be a cute runner, too.
ReplyDeleteLove your Santas and placemats!
ReplyDeleteFun Christmas fabrics! I’ve done a braid runner in the past, but that pattern seems a bit eas! Thanks for the link. I’m going to try it when I get back to my machine!
ReplyDeleteWhat great fabrics! Love that scrappy, Christmassy look!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute, Diann! I have an old table runner in that pattern (gifted to me decades ago) and have been wanting a new one for ages. Great inspiration - and a clever use for Christmas (or any holiday) strips!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt-as-you-go placemats -- festive!
ReplyDeleteSo much Christmas cheer at your house! Cute placemat, and I love the new table runner. Good job using the Easy Breezy blocks as leaders and enders. Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteYour placemat is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI saw that pattern on Samelia's Mum and thought about it! It's looking really pretty and sounds like you're having fun with it.
I have a bag kit that uses that technique for the braid. I really should try and work one of my kits every couple of months next year. Such a cheerful mat for those sipping sessions.
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much for sharing Melisa's Snowman patterns! I'm downloading them and hoping to stitch them up in 2022. your Rainbow Trips is lovely as is your quilting. Beautifully done!
