A scrappy Christmas squirrel

 Although I was trying to be productive this week, working on adding borders to the Rainbow Jungle...


I also had an idea I wanted to try that turned out to be quick and easy!  I got out some Christmas scraps and cut them into 2.5 inch strips.

I also cut a backing and some batting about 14 x 18 inches.

Using the quilt-as-you-go technique, I sewed the strips down to the batting and backing and top-stitched each strip on the right side.


I shared this picture the other day - the backing and binding.


I ended up with two fun Christmas placemats for the dinner table!

These measure 12.5 x 16.5.

A few years ago I had made napkins out of the penguin fabric, so now our table is all set.


Now back to those Rainbow Jungle borders - just one left to measure and sew on!

    I'm kinda getting burned out on big quilts -- one can only use so many -- so I'm going to try more little projects like you do next year.

    I like that quilt as you go method for the placemats it looks like it would go rather fast that way. I had a quilt as you go book once from someone who used the decorative stitches on her sewing machine for this and of course it disappeared I probably thought I would never be interested in it and gave it away. now it is something I could see working or placemats really well.

    I love QAYG placemats! I made some fall ones for us this year, as well as finished off some spring ones. No Christmas ones yet, but what am I waiting for??!!

    Such a great idea to whip up some Christmas placemats, fun and easy. Not long now till your Rainbow Jungle will be completed, cant wait to see this one in all its Rainbow glory.

    The placemats look very easy to do and they match the table topper perfectly. I spy the peppermint candy in both. Our dining room table is filled with my husband's business clutter so there's no room for placements but I'll keep the idea in mind.

    Love the placemats! I also love your cute Christmas penguin fabric. My daughter made coasters out of it for us one year, and we leave them out all year long.

    Diann I absolutely LOVE your continued flirtation with squirrels. :-) These are just perfect and will be enjoyed for lots more years. You've made me think that wouldn't it be cool to have like 6 or 12 (ha) placemats in all different designs but all with Christmas fabrics? I mean two placemats are nice, but kind of lonely... for when we can (if ever sigh) host big gatherings again. :-) Thanks so much for all your linkups this year!
