Did you know this past Tuesday, July 30th, was World Embroidery Day? No? Well, I didn't either, but as a newly minted fan of embroidery, I thought I should participate! So, I traced another of the little basket designs from Gail Pan's Patchwork Loves Embroidery, and have been enjoying stitching on it!
According to the World Embroidery Day Manifesto, embroidery is an act of peace, and can be comforting, healing, rebellious, pleasurable, and perfect, among other things. While I am rarely perfect OR rebellious, lol, I am definitely happy to be finding peace, comfort, and healing in this pleasurable craft!
I also love hand sewing binding on my quilting projects, and did a little of that this week.

This book is the latest in a favorite mystery series set in the Southwest.
I also enjoyed finishing this book this week -
Another favorite author, Susan Wiggs. This story is about a mom and daughter on a cross-country road trip, taking the daughter to college. Along the way, the mom is working on a memory quilt out of her daughter's clothing from her growing up years.
I guess you could say my favorite summer things include hand stitching, good books, and tomatoes right out of the garden!

Didn't know about embroidery day, I like your butterfly! I am working on a binding now for handwork too. I'll be looking for that book, I like Susan Wiggs too.
ReplyDeleteYour tomato plants look a lot better than mine! I have already picked some cherry tomatoes and have a few Bradleys that will be ready to pick soon.

ReplyDeletemy tomato plants did horribly this summer and I pulled them up and threw them in the woods! covered in bugs constantly I finally picked all tomatoes off and have them ripening on the windowsill - next year I might try one good plant on the deck and see what happens.

Hi Diann! YUM - tomatoes fresh out of the garden, still slightly warm from the sun are just the.best.thing.on.earth. Or if not the best, definitely right up there! I didn't know there was a World Embroidery Day. I'm sorry I missed it - I don't recall doing any handwork of any type on Tuesday but I do enjoy many forms of it. ~smile~ Roseanne

I miss hand needle work- yours is lovely. HOME GROWN TOMATO- yes, please. What a difference from store bought. I also like Susan Wiggs books- I'm pretty sure I read that one and liked it. Have a great day!mary
ReplyDeleteI don't do much embroidery, but I do like to have hand sewing, and binding is one of them. I don't think I've read either of those authors. I'm reading some good books lately too. I should share them in a post. Love home grown tomatoes! Nothing beats the taste!
ReplyDeleteHave you tried the James doss series of books set in the Southwest? I love those-- full of humor. I don't do a lot of hand binding--I use the machine and save the handwork for quilting or embroidery; my fave is redwork..or cross stitching...cute basket you've got going--and it is soothing work, i feel hugs, Julierose

ReplyDeleteI think I've read other books by those same authors. They're both so good! I think any handwork is very calming. I love to sit and stitch or knit. I've got a few tomatoes too but mine are tiny!!

ReplyDeleteI used to love Tony Hillerman mysteries, which were set in the southwest. I saw the name Anne Hillerman and looked it up, and she is his daughter! I will have to try one of her books.

ReplyDeleteI concur with all your likes. Sounds very much like being at my house except Hubby is drinking the wine and I'm wishing I could. (Doesn't agree with me). I always love to see your embroidery and I really should point you towards Mary Corbets Needle n Thread Network as she is the online goddess of embroidery. Loads of tutorials and free patterns.

ReplyDeleteI had no idea about World Embroidery Day! I don't have any embroidery projects on the go right now - all cross-stitch. Maybe I should find one … I recently made a wish list of the things I want to do before summer is over, and one of them is read a book on the back deck - we are so busy in the summer that this always gets put on the back shelf!
