A Scrappy Zipper Pouch

I wanted to start with a big Thank You to everyone who commented last week on my Batik Star post!  I really appreciated all of your encouragement.

I did finish up the borders I wanted to add, pieced the back, and got it layered for quilting, but then life got in the way and I had to set this project aside.

I will definitely get this finished as soon as I'm able to!

Meanwhile, I wanted share something else I finished up this week that is scrappy, fun, and also useful!

I found a tutorial on Moda Bake Shop for a Vinyl Project Pouch, by Kristina Brinkerhoff.  I've been wanting to make one because I have some vinyl to use up.  I also had most of a mini charm pack of Picnic by Bonnie and Camille and a few leftover bits of a B&C Hello Darling layer cake to use up.

The main part of the pouch was made like a mini quilt - a 36 patch block, batting, and a piece for the backing cut from a fat quarter.

I quilted that -

Then pieced the front out of the layer cake leftovers, added the zipper and vinyl, plus binding, and it was a pretty quick finish!

Really the hardest part was cutting the vinyl accurately, because it slips around on the cutting mat and is so hard to see!

This pouch ended up to be about 12.25 inches square, a good size to lay flat in a suitcase.  (More about actually putting it in a suitcase to come!)

Happy Sunday stitching to everyone!

  1. I have never made anything with vinyl that I can think of - it looks like it would really come in handy for travel

  2. Oh, that's a great pattern! All the vinyl pouches I've seen before don't use binding like that, so the seams show. This one is so neat and tidy, no exposed seams! And your fabrics are darling, too :)

  3. Very cool! I need a pouch like that for taking quilt blocks to guild meetings. I don't want to fold them and I don't have anything big enough. I'd have to make it a little bigger, but that wouldn't be too hard. Thanks for the idea!

  6. That's a wonderful bag!! (And I agree on vinyl disappearing on the cutting board - I cut some for a pocket in a bag and I 'lost' it twice before I got the bag done!)

  7. Next time, try making the vinyl with painter's tape before cutting. It might not help with the slipping. However, it should stop the disappearing act.

  8. What a great way to use up some of your stash and create a useful item! I've not sewn with vinyl, but it might be worth a try! I'm curious where you are taking it in your suitcase . . .

  11. I agree--cutting and sewing that clear, aka invisible!, vinyl is tricky! Neat pouch you made! And a free tute, too. Sew cool!

  12. How cute! I've saved the link, now I just need to make myself do it.
Now for the questions: Did you cut the vinyl with a regular rotary cutter? And did you use a regular machine needle to sew with it? Do you feel it's pretty roomy inside? I'm thinking they would make nice gifts for my granddaughters, although I want to make one for myself!

  13. Oh yes Vinyl. It is on my to-do list for someday when I am in between projects. The fabrics you chose are cheery and bright and a perfect case for a suitcase indeed. I am sure it is perfect for 17 other things. Safe travels to you, wherever that suitcase takes you :-)

  14. Love the vinyl project pouch. I must give it a try.
Thank you for your sweet comment on my post. I like to make tiny coin purses. They make nice little gifts. Here is a link to the youtube video clip that I use.

The outside is two pieces of fabric 3.5" x 5" and the lining is two pieces of fabric 3.5" x 5". The tabs are 2.5" squares. I use a 7" zipper or whatever I have and just make sure it is a polyester zipper. I usually include the link in my posts when I picture them, but forgot to do so this time. Senior moment.
    Good luck.
