but one of my scrappy partners in crime, Cathy over at Crazy by Design, shared last week or so that she was going to make a Book Shelf quilt. When I asked her about it, she sent me this link to a Craftsy tutorial for making a book shelf block.
Well, that did it! After checking out the tutorial, off I went to my scrap bin to pull out the strips that were needed to make one.
Okay, I made two!
These blocks are fun, and much simpler than I expected. I will definitely be making more of them! After I got started, I began thinking about the different fun things that I could try - like how to make a book that is leaning, or books that are laying down versus standing up. It might be fun to add some other items to the books shelves, too. Maybe a plant or a stuffed animal? (This could get way out of hand!)
I know my blocks need more work - like something that actually looks like a shelf for the books to be sitting on?! - but I'm going to keep having fun trying different things!

And since these blocks definitely represent a "Drop Everything and Make It" moment for me, I'm linking up with Sandra over at mmmquilts for her new DrEAMi link party on Jan 28th!
So for the shelf does it work just to put in a brown sashing across the whole thing? I have seen a couple quilts in the past like this, very interesting way to use scraps.
ReplyDeleteNann at With Strings Attached, a former librarian, has made quite a few of these.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh these are so cute! Lol on the lure of a new project - I relate! :)
ReplyDeleteMy charity quilting group made a wall hanging like this for a local library. It was so much fun!
ReplyDeleteI love the book shelf blocks. I saw Cathy's too and thought about doing one or six myself. One of these days! I am deep in the throws of reorganizing AGAIN. I have to get this done, or progress will not be forthcoming!
ReplyDeleteKeep enabling, it's okay1
Well, I'm happy to be your friend and enabler, Diann! What else are scrappy partners in crime for?!? LOL. I love your blocks and will be watching your progress along the way. As for me, I had planned to use gray for my shelving, but I think I'll use brown instead (and save the gray for a future background).
ReplyDeleteYou did NOT!!! I wanted to make those book blocks. I'm SEW jealous!! Will you be combining this with the RSC? I'm guessing that you won't be, based on your color selection. Have FUN with this project!
ReplyDeletesuch a good way for using up scraps yours are working well
ReplyDeleteThose book blocks are so fun! Enjoy the process.
ReplyDelete"this could get way out of hand"...LOL!! THAT, my friend, is EXACTLY the phrase that belongs with a DrEAMi! I am trying to resist this cute (and à propos in my world) block... Will be watching for what else you put on those shelves...maybe a squirrel?!
ReplyDeleteOops, hit send too fast...and thank you so much for linking up with my first linky party! ;-)
