Stuck!

October in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is for working with neutrals or figuring out what your block sets need and finishing them up.  So my goal this week has been to get out the Gameboard Blocks and work out what is needed.  But I seem to be stuck!

Here are the 28 blocks I've made, laid out in color groups.  There are three of every color except blue (4 of those), plus two light neutral blocks, and a black one.

Having four blue blocks and then
those three neutrals/black has me thrown a bit.
How to use them in a layout?

Inspired by a layout I saw on someone's blog, I tried this one next.  What it's supposed to be is cool colors flowing to warm colors flowing back to cool colors.  That helped me work in the black block and the extra blue one.

But what is needed for those two empty spaces?

Then I just switched the yellow and orange blocks - and I think I'm finally getting somewhere!

So... two more orange blocks?
Or should they be red? Pink? One each?
Opinions welcomed!

Then my brain was tired so I decided to go back to working on my October squirrel project - the fall tablerunner!  Using more of the pieces from the fat quarter bundle, I pieced a backing.

That center section is these adorable owls!

And quilting is underway.

  1. Seems like your last layout is good. I think you have to go with an orange-gold like a sunset, or a pale apricot. Having those colors in your stash may be the biggest challenge, LOL!!

  2. I am thinking more red? That is a tough one--you did well with the different re-arrangements.
Only 34 here this morning--but still no frost here as we are on the southern-most coast of CT and the ocean is still a bit on the warm side...hugs, Julierose

  3. How about a peachy colour ? Yellow-orange? I have some fabric in those colours but you live too far away for me to drop it off at your house! The table runner is so pretty and the pieced back is fun. Gail at the cozy quilter.

  4. I’m with everyone else in that some shades of peachy orange would look good for those last two blocks but I kind of like the second layout with them. What is that block called?

  5. Love the 2nd and 3rd layout. On the 3rd, I would 2 more orange, maybe darker, could even blend into rusty orange.

  6. Layout #2 with two more orange blocks and ta-da! Done! Whatever you decide is going to make a nice quilt. What a great block!

  7. My brain would be tired too, but I do like that last layout. I always defer to greater minds about colors, so the peach/orange suggestions sound great! I first thought how about a rainbow block thrown in somewhere, but I that probably wouldn't make much impact. Whatever you do, it is already amazing!

  8. The second layout does flow better. I'd just add two more either orange/yellow or orange/red blocks. Those would be a good bridge between the yellow and the red.

  9. Great job on coming up with three layouts for those game blocks! I'd go with two more orange blocks and be finished! Those blocks are all awesome together!

  10. Sometimes we just need to step away from a project and then it all comes together. I think I would do another orange and perhaps an orangish red one and go with your last layout.

  11. I really love how you've layed these out. Maybe go with a coral shade of orange (or an red/orange) for the final 2 blocks. I need to lay mine out to see what colors I actually have made so far.

  12. Looking so good, Diann!!! I think 2 more oranges would be just right.

  13. Orange to tan? or that really brown gold? to go with the couple of more-neutral yellow blocks you have.

  14. I never can resist solving other people's design questions. So, before you had even rearranged the blocks I came up with your answer - orange. Not flame orange. More a fall leaf past its prime and turning towards brown, muted orange. It will be a lovely quilt when it is done.

  16. If I can offer an opinion as well, I like layout number two, with an extra two orangey toned blocks.

  17. I agree with Kate. If you go with layout #3, I’d try to choose rusty oranges or or reddish browns . Maybe they are the same thing. IDK. Layouts are the hardest part for me.
