I Like Thursday #486

It's the "yard work" time of year and we always take our grass and tree branches to the city recycle center to be mulched.  Every time we go, I see something interesting there!

Things are growing, too.  I planted two tomatoes in pots this year - one for slicing and one cherry tomato.  The cherry tomato is the one farthest over in the photo - and it has blossoms on it already!

This dianthus is looks happy!

We've had some extended family coming through town and some of the kids went to visit my mom.  Mom has three grandsons and three granddaughters.  These are the sweet granddaughters who all paid her a visit together!

LeeAnna's question of the week is about insects.  Do we have a favorite?  I'm not a big insect fan, unlike my college roommate who is an entomologist and loves all bugs!  But I did have an interesting experience with this beautiful praying mantis who showed up in our garden several years ago.

She lived in the ground cover garden by our front step, and
everyday when I watered it, she would climb up from underneath the plants.
Eventually we saw her mate, and then we never saw anything more after that.
I had hoped to see some babies hatch from there, too, but never did.
Fascinating experience anyway, though!

  1. Hmmm ...the log slice looks like a heart. Your dianthus is gorgeous, Diann- such a vibrant red. Your tomato plants are doing great. I look forward to hearing about your Summer harvest in the future and if you spot in a baby praying mantis. Hugs.

  3. I like those praying mantis, I haven't seen one in years here. My tomato plants have a couple of flowers, I also planted one slicer and one cherry size.

  4. How nice to have that recycling place to take your yard debris! Your tomatoes look very healthy and happy, they must be in just the right spot. I love the red dianthus in the blue pot.
Was your Mom overwhelmed, did she enjoy the visit from those pretty granddaughters?
Love the praying mantis photo. We had an interesting experience with a Texas Brown tarantula a couple weeks ago. Hubs found it while he was weed-eating. It rose up on its back legs and raised its front arms when we got close to it. They are defensive and will bite (non-poisonous) but are mostly docile. I swear it actually looked me in the eye! I captured it and encouraged it to go under our shed. ;)

  6. I wonder if someone took that stump to make a burl table? It seems like that piece of wood was calling for recycling! Love the vibrant red of your dianthus. I'm not a bug person either although I applaud the spiders for spinning beautiful webs and catching insects!

  8. How nice that all 3 granddaughters were able to visit Gma at the same time. They all looked so happy together. I am not a fan of insects but the ones I do like are butterflies and dragonflies.

  9. How nice of the three granddaughters to take time to visit your mom. Praying mantises are interesting insects. Perhaps you just missed seeing the babies, since the adults make a sac in fall and the babies don't come out until spring.

    1. Thanks, Sheila! I didn't know that the baby praying mantises didn't come out until Spring, so you're right - I may have missed looking for them. We have a large section of ground cover right by our front step, and that's where the male and female were, so I assume the egg sac was underneath that. I didn't want to disturb it, so I never looked!

  12. Your mom looks in 7th Heaven surrounded by her granddaughters. I love it! We used to have a HUGE praying mantis that would sit by the hummingbird feeders. I thought it wanted the sweet water but my husband said it was big enough and capable enough to snatch one of my hummers up & eat it. I don't know if that's true but I lured the mantis onto a stick and took it to the far garden, away from my feeders. I hope he/she enjoyed its new residence! Lol!

  13. It's so nice that your mom got to visit with her grand daughters. It's always fun to watch insects. I'm OK with them as long as they aren't crawling on me.
