It was a chocolate cake kind of week here. 😊 With some extended family in town, we all met up at my sister's house for dinner and a chocolate sheet cake was requested for dessert. I think a lot of families have something like this in their shared recipe boxes - we've been making this one for years. It's so yummy - it's good to have lots of people to share it with.
But... there was frosting leftover, and we just couldn't waste it, lol! So I suggested to younger son that there could be such a thing as "Sourdough Chocolate Cake," and it turns out, there is. He found a recipe and made it, and yum!
Before frosting...
And after...
So good!
(And now I need to work off those extra calories!:)
LeeAnna's question of the week is about a choice between two summer activities - would you rather play in the garden or lay in a hammock and read a book? My answer is - can I pick both? I've been enjoying planting things in my pots and small raised bed this year, and things are growing! Here's a view of our back porch and some of my flowers in pots. Although we don't have a hammock, this is a good reading spot!

But you know I also love to read, and here is this week's book. Kate Quinn is a favorite author, and I have particularly liked her historical fiction novels. This one is a whole different genre, but has really grabbed me!
I don't usually show a photo of the back cover, but this week, I had to!
Oh yes!
I can’t remember the last time I made a cake. My daughter usually requests cupcakes for her birthday. Your chocolate cakes do look yummy! I always like to see what other bloggers are reading. Gail at the cozy quilter
ReplyDeleteMy father was a huge chocoholic. Our go to cake is a Chocolate coke a cola cake. I should make one to share with My Girl when I go visit later this month, it's both our favorite. It's always nice to find a good book to read. Hopefully from your back porch.
ReplyDeleteOh those cakes - yum! We used to make "Texas sheet cake" all the time, mainly for church potlucks. My favorite version had nuts and mini marshmallows in that wonderful icing, I think it was the rocky road version. I bet that sourdough one was delicious. Your back porch looks so inviting!
ReplyDeleteOur go chocolate cake was an old one--called 'Never Fail Chocolate cake' and you just dumped all the ingredients in a bowl and mixed it and baked it--it was always moist and oh--so yummy!!
ReplyDeletesummer time--think you need to do both--spend some time in the gardens in the mornings when it is cool and reading in the afternoon--for some and stitching for some of us--we did have a hammock growing up at one point--but not sure that we read in it????? hugs, di
I'll take a BIG piece of that chocolate cake and lay in the hammock enjoying your flowers!
ReplyDeleteYour reading spot looks lovely!
ReplyDeleteI would want to do both, too!
ReplyDeleteI do love sourdough cake. I think it is better a day or two after baking! I don't frost mine; but, yours looked delicious!
ReplyDeleteI like your outside area - good place to read I bet. I haven't read that Kate Quinn book I have most of hers. Here Texas Sheet Cakes are very popular - chocolate just on a sheet pan
ReplyDeleteYour cakes look wonderful and your patio seems like the perfect place to eat cake! :D I don't know the Astral Library. I might have to see if the library has that one...simply because the back is fantastic! :D Have a great weekend!
