We spent some time on Monday exploring a new park in our town that we hadn't been to before. It has a little bit of everything - a great playground, sculptures, walking trails, and fishing areas.
I've been telling all my friends with grandkids
that they need to bring them here!
The sculptures are fun - much larger than life-size - native animals. Wild turkeys!
And prairie dogs!
That trail you can see back behind there is where we walked.
You can go down to the river there and check out the fishing ponds, too.
It was a beautiful day!
This week's book was a good one - The Keeper of Happy Endings, by Barbara Davis. It's my book club's June book. It is historical fiction, taking place in the 1940s and the 1980s.
LeeAnna's question of the week is about perms. Have we had one and how did it work out? This one made me laugh! I have very curly hair! So curly, in fact, that people have asked me if I had a perm. 😄 When I was a teenager, some product came out that claimed to straighten curly hair, and my mom thought we ought to try it. I think it was done much like a perm - you combed this stuff in, left it for awhile, and then pretended your hair was magically straight (as was the style in the early 70s when I was in high school). I think it lasted at the most for a week or two.
In college, I met Mike, whose hair was also curly back then, and our friends called us the "Brillo Pads!" We even dressed up as brillo pad boxes for a Halloween party way back then. I wish I could find a picture of that, but I'm not sure where it would be.
How's this for a 70s look?!
Have a great Thursday, everyone!

From one curly head to another: we rock!
ReplyDeleteI always had straight hair and wanted curls. Didn't we tend to want what we didn't have? I remember my older cousin ironing her very long hair to get it straight. Crazy! The park looks like a nice place to walk and the book sounds interesting. I think I'll download it from Audible for the plane ride in a week or so. You always have good book recs...keep 'em coming!
ReplyDeleteOh I love that photo of you and Mike! Mom always wanted curls for me, so I had perms even as a child. I'll never forget the smell. As I've grown older, I'm happy with my straight hair, but I notice the gray is a bit wavy. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful park. What is the mountain range behind the turkeys? I zoomed in, and what a gorgeous view you have!
Great photo of you two! I had plenty of perms over the years. Now, just straight hair and waffle between short and shoulder length (currently growing out and able to put in a scrunchie). I'm sure I'll cut it off in a year or two! What a pretty park you have near you. I'll have to check out that book. Currently re-listening to a Jennifer Ashley - Cat Holloway series.
ReplyDeleteI got perms in the late 70's early 80's to go with the curly look - my hair is straight it was perfect for the late 60's early 70's parted in the middle and half way down my back but I always wish it was thicker. Now it is white/gray and I need to put stuff in it to get a little bit of body and wear it short. I love that park neat sculptures and I think I read that book will look and see
ReplyDeleteMy cousin married a hair dresser and I wanted a perm so she gave me one--and I came out looking like a brillo pad that is for sure--very fuzzy tight out of control spikes--I tried everything to calm it down--was not a happy teenager there for while!!!--after that I only did home perms!!!! hugs, di
ReplyDeleteThose sculptures are fun! I had absolutely flat straight hair as a kid and got perms. Thankfully my hair started to curl on its own when I got older.
ReplyDeleteThat park looks like a fun place to visit. We have been to a few sculpture gardens in our travels and I’m always amazed at the creativity on display. Yes…I had several perms … my hair is very straight…isn’t it funny how people with straight hair want curls/waves and people with curly hair want it to be straight??? I’m happy with my current haircut and no perm!!!!
ReplyDeleteGail at the cozy quilter.
Looks like a fun park. I used to get perms every six months or so for my board straight hair that will not hold a set. I stopped years ago.
