One of my favorite events of the year was this week. "Loveland Loves to Read" is our city's One Book program. Every year my book club reads the chosen book and then we get to attend the author talk event, along with many other readers from around the city. This year's book was The Frozen River, by Ariel Lawhon, and she was an excellent speaker!
Younger son has purchased a "smart telescope" and we are fascinated by what he can do with it. Among other things, he got this great photograph of the moon the other night.
I decided to draw out the kite blocks that are needed for the stars in Sandra's Spring QAL so that I could paper-piece them. I had to start by making some decisions about what fabric goes where, so I did that in my graph paper notebook. I know a lot of people use their computers for this, but there's something very satisfying about doing it the "old-fashioned way," lol!
And my paper-piecing worked! I need a few more of these, but they shouldn't take too long.
Did you know that Saturday is National Telephone Day? LeeAnna's question of the week is about telephones and how we interact with them. I have an iPhone and I use it for the basic things - phone calls, texting, maps. I have some grocery apps on there for digital coupons, and then that's about it. When I want to do other online things - email, blogging, reading - I use my Samsung tablet. It's like a cross between a phone and a laptop - easier to see what things say, but lighter than a laptop to carry around!
Thanks for visiting on I Like Thursday!

You have some fun fabrics picked for the star blocks. I use the computer, I'm too impatient to take care when I'm working on paper. Very cool telescope image. They are a lot of fun to play with. My Guy has one, but he hasn't gotten it out in years.
ReplyDeleteThose fabrics are so pretty! I agree with you about graph paper - I use it rarely, but when I do it really helps.
ReplyDeleteI did a double take when I saw the author's name. Lawhon is a variant of Lawhorn, which is my maiden name! That does sound like an excellent book.
Your son got a fantastic photo of the moon. I imagine there will be many hours enjoying his new toy. Love the fabric combination in your kite blocks. Looks like you have a nice plan for them.
ReplyDeleteThe Frozen River was a good read. How great to hear the author speak! I'm glad you enjoyed her. Those kite blocks look perfect.
ReplyDeleteI have not read that book. I have news aps on my phone - substack, a grocery list ap, I read and answer my email from comments on my blog on my phone because something happened and I no longer get my comments to my email on the computer (very strange) facebook etc. I mainly use my ipad for watching movies but if my kindle runs out of battery unexpectedly I can read on the ipad. On the phone I have the kindle ap, audio books, instagram etc. I do use my phone for a lot but it is hard to type because it is an older Iphone - we plan on getting new ones soon both of us are having trouble with ours we have had them for a long time.
ReplyDeleteI will have to look up what a smart telescope is. It sounds interesting!
ReplyDeleteOooh such a wonderful picture of the moon. I bet your family is having a lot of fun with the new telescope. Gorgeous fabrics that you have chosen for the SAL. ( I still use graph paper too. ) Being tech challenged, I still use my laptop for most of my online needs. I haven't graduated to using the phone yet. LOL. Maybe one day. Have a beautiful day, dear Diann. Hugs
ReplyDeleteYour kite blocks are so cute. I like old-fashioned graph paper also. I usually do pretty well. I use my tablet a lot. My laptop is mostly used for banking, projects requiring Microsoft Office . I prefer excel to numbers on my tablet. Change is hard. LOL
ReplyDeleteI heard that author talk about the frozen river on zoom. We are discussing that book at the book club I lead in June. Great start on your next project. This is a celestial post with stars and that neat picture of the moon!
ReplyDeleteSometimes graph paper is faster than firing up the computer. I don't do much on my phone - calls, texts, calendar of appts, and pick up of online grocery orders is about it. I prefer the laptop for everything else.
