A blue and orange house...

To finish out the month of January, I made another house for my "Year in the Neighborhood" project.  I mostly worked on this last Sunday afternoon, when the Denver Broncos were playing in the AFC Championship game for a chance to go to the Super Bowl.  (Unfortunately,  the Broncos lost the game, but I still had fun making this house!)

My husband has been a fan of the Denver Broncos since before I met him, so I cheer them on, too, and so does our older son.  Some people might say we "bleed" orange and blue!

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’™

When I decided to make this house, I wondered how I could show this is where Broncos' fans live with fabric from my stash.  I don't have much novelty fabric, and definitely nothing with footballs or horses.  But I did have an old t-shirt!

I made the center section (what I consider the front door) out of a Bronco logo cut from the old t-shirt and backed by some fusible interfacing as you would do if you were making a whole quilt out of t-shirts.  There are blue curtains in the windows and orange shutters.

Once that decision was made, the rest of the block was pretty simple.

Even though it was snowing like crazy that day, football is usually played on a grassy green field, so I gave it that for the yard.

This house needed a tree, so it got one with snow on the ground.

And here is the neighborhood so far!

In other sewing-related news, I was sorting through my thread yesterday and was surprised to see how many partials spools of thread I have collected.  These are the spools that don't have enough left to fill a bobbin with, so originally I began saving them for sewing bindings.

It's too embarrassing to show a picture of the whole bunch, so I'll just share what I'm planning.  I'm starting with all the partial spools of Gutermann Sew-All #22 (Eggshell).  I can't fill up a bobbin with these, but I can put them in the top thread holder and use them up that way.

I bet I can get a few blocks sewn up with
these scraps of thread in the next few weeks!

  1. You have some nice houses going up in your neighborhood. Sorry about the Broncos. At least they made it one more step than my Eagles! Ugh! Well, the good news is, pitchers and catchers report soon LOL. I like your idea for using up the partial spools of thread.

  2. Another interesting house in the neighbourhood! I have a colourful thread collection and a bin full of empty spools…I’m not sure why I’m collecting them. I guess it makes me feel like I have accomplished something when I see it! Good idea to use up those bits of thread. Your sky fabric reminds me of the Northern lights. Gail at the cozy quilter

  3. Cute Bronco house;))) great to use an old tee for the door, i think.
I don't have too many partial spools left as I have been trying to use them up--despite the fact that I have to keep changing them as they empty way too soon--hahaha. good luck Hugs, Julierose

  4. Is it a house or a horse barn? LOL. Your new neighborhood will be such a great quilt.

  5. What a fun neighborhood you have going! Why not just use the partial spools to make partial bobbins? When piecing blocks, sewing lines are short and likely you will notice when it runs out.

  6. That is a cool house Diann! Your T-shirt logo is perfect for it, and that sky fabric is pretty. I love the start on your neighborhood.

  7. Very cool house, Diann. I watched that game too and that snow was really coming down hard near the end of the game. DH is from Maine so I wont tell yu who he was rooting for. We are linking up our houses with Andree tomorrow. I still want to top stitch down some fused pieces on mine.

  9. That is one extra special house! What a great plan you have for those partial thread spools. I have started sewing my strings with whatever thread is around. With string sewing the color doesn't matter nor does the type. I too am looking to use spools. .. mine were "gifted!"

  10. We have big Bronco fans on both sides of us and can hear them hooting and hollering, hehe. Sad that they lost last weekend. Way to go to add a Bronco label into your latest house. I use cone thread for my sewing/piecing so it takes me a long time to empty one but when I do I feel so giddy!! Have fun trucking through those:)

  11. Seahawks household here, Diann. But I definitely thought of you and your Broncos while watching the last couple of games before the Super Bowl. Your little Bronco house is adorable! :)

  12. that is a bit of thread isn't it :) I usually use them on the top of the machine if I can. I think the house block turned out great.

  13. You found a very creative solution to create your Bronco's live here house. Very fun! You've got a good start on that neighborhood. I use a large cone for most of my sewing and so far I've been able to use all of it, though I get careful what I sew with it once it gets close to the end.

  16. I like the way you found inspiration for your latest house/barn block. It's great to make something that has a special meaning for you and your family.

  17. Oh, I want to live in your neighborhood! Your Bronco Fan house is adorable! We are Bronco fans too, although I do still root for my old California college teams, and some of the pro teams that my kids loved growing up (Packers, Dolphins, 49’ers). But I’ll probably be rooting for Seattle in the Super Bowl. And I’ll root for Bad Bunny too - even though I don’t know a thing about him - simply because he ticks off the Mango Mussolini.

  18. Gotta love your newest house block! Those trees are pretty darn cute too. I will be watching the Super Bowl, but am not a fan of either team. Although my reasons may be suspect as the players I didn’t like don’t play for those teams anymore. So maybe I should be open minded. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ˜ข

  20. Okay love your Broncos house! Great save using the logo from a tshirt. Yes, those spools are great top thread for sewing up scraps or to put with hand sewing or EPP projects. Also could be used to stay-stitch the edges of a finished quilt top that has a lot of seams at the edge. Thread of any amount need not go to waste!
