This week, I seem to be jumping around from one thing to another in my sewing room. I opened up and spread out those fat quarters I bought in Oregon last week. I don't buy a lot of novelty fabric, but I do love these. They're going to become my Table Scraps Challenge project for September.
I've been hunting around for more light blues and greens to see if I can find enough to sew two more 16 patch star blocks for one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts. More about that on Saturday!
And I opened up a project box to find these - the last of the jelly roll strips that I made Glowing Hearts and then the braided tablerunner from.
Just for fun I decided to see if I could use them to make a placemat. I started by sewing them all together end to end to make one long strip - jelly roll race style - it measured 154 inches! Then I folded it in half and sewed along one side multiple times until I had about a 16.5 x 18.5 inch piece.
16.5 x 18.5.
I had to laugh when those two blue squares ended up side by side! Finally, I squared it up to a 12.5 x 16.5 inch rectangle, and called it good.
Wednesday afternoon, thanks to two gently encouraging friends, I ripped out the seam between the two blue squares, flipped the left section around, and fixed the "two blue squares touching" problem, and it really does look so much better!
One of these days I will quilt this and bind it, and it will definitely be used!
But now I'm going to get back to working on the RSC blocks!
Linking up with The Inquiring Quilter for Wednesday Wait Loss.
And at Alycia Quilts for Finished or Not Friday.
Wondering what your Table Scraps will look like, I'll be watching. If you really don't like the two blue squares next to each other you could rip that one row and flip it or put it on the other end, just a thought;)
ReplyDeleteThat's the result of "random" -- and all together the scraps look great.
ReplyDeleteSeems that is always the way it happens;)))) I guess random is random for sure...I think it came out so pretty--great use for leftovers...
ReplyDeleteI am in the midst of using my leftover precuts for my new-to- me star block and we always eat leftover dinners here...[sometimes the leftovers taste even better than the original meal we find;))) ]
Hugs, Julierose
What a quick way to use up the last of that jelly roll. You are the scrap master! Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss. https://www.inquiringquilter.com/questions/2025/09/17/wednesday-wait-loss-450
ReplyDeleteYou've got some fun fabrics selected for your next table scraps project. You mad good use of those left over strips. Happy stitching this week.
ReplyDeleteI love that brown fabric on the end that you picked up in Oregon it looks like pebbles on the beach in the photo
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabrics and patterns.
ReplyDeleteHow adorable and whimsical! Now that is my kind of sewing ! I look forward to seeing your fabrics in your Tablescrap project. These fabrics are wonderful souvenirs from your vacation. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteI like that improv style, just letting be what will be. But I'd have to take out that one seam and turn one section around so those blues weren't side by side, That would make me nuts every time I looked at it.
ReplyDeleteI see why you were drawn to those beautiful fat quarters - shells, seagulls, and is that sea glass? Remembrances of your recent trip, right? And isn't it amazing that those random strips made such a pretty placemat? I love that those two blue pieces wanted to be side by side - that is the true nature of scrappy.
ReplyDeletePretty colors for your Tablescrap challenge. I like your little placemat, too. Always fun to be able to use up those little bits and pieces!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I am so glad I wasn't the only one screaming in my head, rip that out and resew!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to use the leftovers from your Glowing Hearts. Turning that strip around was a great move!
